About this ebook

Many things in this world cannot be explained: the birth of the cosmos for example—does a higher power really exist—or what about magical and mythical creatures of the paranormal?

Payton knows this better than anyone, even though she could probably give a few of those answers.

When this empath’s world shifts on its axis, she discovers life as she knows it is much more convoluted—it’s a dark and dangerous place. One filled with things that go bump in the night, causing death and chaos, which may mean the end of her kind.

Despite the numerous warnings from her parents, she never once believed them about the dangers lurking about, until one brutal night when they were taken from her before her very eyes.

She sees her gifts as a curse—ones that would ultimately lead to her demise—but when a mere stranger interrupts her life by knocking her feet out from under her, Payton soon discovers she has a purpose to serve.

A mission: one a lot more complex than she could ever imagine.

But could she do it matched?

And what the hell did that even mean?

    Essence Derived - Carey Decevito

    Prologue

There are many things about this world that can’t be explained; I, for one, and how I came to be. I’m not talking about how my folks met, the fact they fell in love, or the part about the birds and the bees. Let’s face it; I need that mental picture about as much as I need a hole in my head.

Like I said, there are things in this world that are inexplicable. Some are dark, some are haunting, and others are wonderful, perhaps even seen as a gift. Magical, if you will. I tend to fall in one of those categories. Which one at this point, I’m not quite sure of; everything is still so new to me.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve led a sheltered life. From a young age, I was taught beauty existed in many different facets. Some possessed it externally, others were blessed with it on the inside, some with a combination of both, and then you had those unfortunate souls who possessed neither. My parents did their best to shield me from the latter.

I’d been told numerous times—too many to count really—I was special. It was something I’d always chalked up to what all parents tell their kids. Don’t get me wrong, by the age of fifteen I knew I wasn’t like everyone else. Feeling a humming sensation at your fingertips, whenever you touch someone, pretty much goes a long way to solidifying that perception. Call it instinct, inkling, or perhaps even a conviction based on the above; I knew I was destined for something bigger than the life that was splayed before me. For one, I seemed to be incredibly attuned with everyone’s emotions, so much so, I found myself overwhelmed by them. My parents further confirmed my newly discovered abilities when I’d come home crying about an incident at school—one that seems so petty now—but I needed to know the truth. If only they’d warned me to brace for what would happen next; causing my world to tilt on its axis, forever changed.

This is my story—my rendition—of how I came to be…

    Chapter One

    The Watcher

She threw one last assessing gaze into the hallway mirror, smiling back at herself.

Her all-black outfit hugged her curves in just the right places.

Fuck, this is torture. Why’d I have to be chosen for this?

Her makeup wasn’t overly done, but those luscious red lips of hers were painted as though she aimed to sin tonight.

That hair. How I’d love to run my fingers through it, see if it were as soft as it looked. Long, lustrous, and black. The silkiest. I found myself imagining how it would feel as it draped down over her shoulders, tickling the skin of my chest, over my stomach…

Fuck, you must think me some kind of creep, don’t you?

    But I’m not.

I was chosen to be here.

    For her.

    For Payton.

Lives depended on it, and hers was the most important.

So I’d do my duty, then get the hell out of Dodge, because Black Beauty was simply just too much of a temptation.

Following my mark on the back of my Ducati Diavel, I pulled over a block away as her taxi came to a stop in front of the only bar on that street: Slick’s.

This place wasn’t one I’d seen her go to in quite some time. In fact, all she seemed to do was work, study, and sleep.

From my own research, I knew money had become tight since her parents’ deaths nearly a year ago. She took courses for a Public Relations degree—I had no idea what she planned to do with it afterward—and she worked at one of my favorite haunts—Delicatessens—in the downtown core of Port Hope.

As her watcher, I’ve noticed her losing weight and looking increasingly stressed and tired over the last few months. I knew her situation would only get tougher, seeing as I’d overheard a phone conversation of hers mentioning she’d gotten herself a new job and wasn’t planning on letting go of her other one. I sympathized with her plight.

When she’d entered Slick’s, I waited a few, then followed her inside, recognizing a few people had already caught on to the magnetism she emitted and warding some of them off with a simple glower. Eyes can be convincing at times with their messages, sometimes more than one would imagine.

    Payton

Tonight was going to be one of my last free nights of frivolity for a long while, which meant I was determined to make the most of it.

Approaching the bar, I’d expected for at least one of my girls to be waiting for me by now but found none.

Ordering a drink while I waited on them, I chose to enjoy the music, allowing the thrumming of the bass vibrating through my body to sway my hips to the beat.

Well, if it isn’t the birthday girl!

A grin spread onto my face, and I turned to see my oldest and dearest friend, Sahara, standing there. An excited squeal escaped us both as we lunged at each other for one of those body-quaking hugs.

Sweets, it’s been too long. I smile at her, then ask, Where are the others? while looking around behind her for any sign of the rest of our crew.

Washroom. Cue her signature eye-roll, which had me giggling.

    Things haven’t changed, I see.

Part of that fact relieved me. When the girls had left for university, leaving me to fend for myself, I’d been afraid everything would change. In some cases, some things have. We’ve all grown older for one; but despite the distance that now separated us more often than not, we’d remained close, probably in thanks to our weekly group Skype chats.

So back to the rest of my kickass gang of girls…

Bethany and Brittany Callem are known in our small circle as the devil twins. Although twins by birth, it’s their high-maintenance personalities and their ability to draw trouble their way, in almost any setting, that gained them their moniker. Their hearts were the biggest out of anyone I knew however, and that made them
