About this ebook
Feeling gratitude and expressing thanks to others is extremely important both for one's satisfaction and for better relationships with others. It involves having a positive outlook, accepting what is now, when you can't make any changes, being grateful for others' help, and giving to others.
As THE GRATITUDE BOOK describes, this outlook on life can take many forms, from gratitude for one's home and possessions, to one's skills, job opportunities, business achievements, and relationships. In turn, this positive attitude not only makes people feel better by focusing on what they have and not on what they lack, but it helps them have better relationships by allying with others with a similar positive and self-affirming outlook.
THE GRATITUDE BOOK provides a broad overview of the many facets of gratitude by combining commentary, quotes, and illustrations, and it concludes with a section on the tips and techniques for using gratitude in your life. The chapters include these topics:
- the value of gratitude and expressing it
- gratitude about yourself
- gratitude and happiness, relationships, appreciation, and saying thanks
- gratitude and achievement, contentment, acceptance, learning and experience
- gratitude and faith, abundance, future benefits, and giving
- gratitude and having a positive attitude, appreciating life, and humility
- and more

The Gratitude Book - Gini Graham Scott Ph.D.
INTRODUCTION
I’ve been thinking about gratitude lately, since this has been a frequent theme at business networking meetings. It is a way for people to deal with disappointments and difficulties in running their company and finding new clients. And everyone has challenges to overcome at times in their personal life.
Thus, it’s more important than ever to overcome any feelings of gloom and doom and stay positive and upbeat. Expressing gratitude is one way. It’s a reminder to think about all the advantages you have so you can better accept the way things are now. Then, you can feel better and be more hopeful about the future. It’s the philosophy of it is what it is,
but say that in an appreciative way, not with a defeatist attitude that suggests that this is how it’s will be, because change isn’t possible.
Feeling gratitude and expressing thanks to others is extremely important both for one’s satisfaction and for better relationships with others. Having gratitude is based on accepting what is now, when you can’t make any changes, so it’s best to acknowledge this situation, rather than feeling upset and discouraged. Not only will you feel better, but that attitude will help you keep going, so you can later change the future to a more positive outcome. It’s an idea I heard at many business groups which is expressed in the well-known serenity quote from Reinhold Niebuhr, the noted American theologian. As he said in a sermon at the Heath Evangelical Union Church in Heath, Massachusetts, in 1934:
"God, grant me the serenity to accept
The things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
One reason that this concept of gratitude has become widely embraced now is a reaction to today’s tumultuous times and the current political situation. Many people are responding to the very real dangers today with fear, and many people, particularly in California and in the East Bay where I live, are very afraid about that, too. They feel their ability to earn a living is on the line, because of assorted budget cuts, a growing climate of intolerance, and crackdowns on immigrants, including people they have known and loved for years.
While some may respond in anger and protest, others I know in the business, personal growth, and health communities have reacted by thinking and talking about being grateful for what one has.
This gratitude can take many forms, from gratitude for one’s home and possessions, to one’s skills, job opportunities, business achievements, and relationships. In turn, this positive attitude not only makes people feel better by focusing on what they have and not on what they lack, but it helps them have better relationships by allying with others with a similar positive and self-affirming outlook. Then, too, being grateful helps to inspire them to continue working towards positive changes, since they are not stuck in regretting what happened in the past, so they can work towards a better future.
In short, feeling and expressing gratitude brings many benefits. In that spirit, I have collected quotes by others, many of them well-known, about the importance of gratitude in everyday life. I have grouped them into the different ways that gratitude is expressed or brings benefits for individuals who feel gratitude for something:
CHAPTER 1: THE VALUE OF GRATITUDE
Feeling gratitude is widely celebrated as an essential value. It is associated with other positive values, such as love, respect, tolerance, and forgiveness. It is associated with providing service, giving to others, and being a good, righteous person.
Being grateful is also viewed as a way to experience fulfillment in everyday life by turning routine activities into a positive satisfying experience or even a blessing. Then, too, having gratitude shifts one’s attention from what one lacks to appreciating what one has, and it improves one’s relationships and health. It makes life more fulfilling, and it changes negatives, such as problems, failures, and mistakes, into opportunities for learning and success. It can replace fear, too, so one is better able to move forward to achieve one’s goals.
The following quotes express these themes.
Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.
Marcus Tutlius Cicero , a Roman philosopher, politician, lawyer, orator, political theorist, consul, and constitutionalist, 106 BC-43 BC
"The greatest wisdom is in simplicity. Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness...The real knowledge is free...All you need
