About this ebook

Learn how to fine-tune your time management skills so you can make better use of valuable time and get more writing on the page!

Want to write but can't seem to find any time in the day to devote to writing?

Writing isn't easy. Writers need time to brainstorm ideas, flesh out story plots, create dynamic and interesting characters, craft engaging dialogue, and write interesting stories. We need time to read other books in our genre, writing reference books on how to write books, and books in other genres. And if our plan is to sell our stories, we need time for market research and building our author platform.

Without time, all of these activities just won't get done.

But the desire to write is a strong one. You feel compelled to write. And you won't be satisfied until you feel good about the amount of progress you're making.

That's where better time management comes in. Learning how to prioritize tasks and prevent distractions are a small part of what it takes to fine-tune your time management skills.

Whether you are a stay-at-home parent or work 9 to 5 outside of the home, finding ways to improve your time management skills will help you make better use of your valuable time so you can get more writing time in.

Building a writing career takes passion, interest, motivation, and time.

30 Days to Better Time Management and More Writing - Jody Calkins

    Introduction

Do you struggle with finding time to write? Do you wish you had more writing time or more time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do?

We’ve all heard the saying that everyone has the same 24 hours in their day. Busy people, lazy people, highly productive people… they all have the same number of hours in a day.

But the difference is how these people spend those hours.

Whether you have ten minutes a day to write or eight hours to write, it’s all relative. Some writers are highly productive with just ten or fifteen minutes each day. Other writers are barely productive even with a full eight hours.

We think that if we just had more time, we’d finally be able to meet our writing goals. We’d finally be able to write (and publish) our first novel or our second novel.

But more time doesn’t necessarily equate to more words on the page.

So, while this book is about improving time management, it’s also about getting the mind right so that we’re able to write more, even if our available writing time is low.

To get the most out of this book, focus on one chapter per day over the course of 30 days. If you need more time, that’s fine. But please don’t rush through this process. Some of the tasks are quick and easy and others will require a bit more thought or effort.

Are you ready to start getting more words on the page and meeting your word count goals?

    Turn the page to begin…

    Day 1

Welcome to the first day of the 30 Days to Better Time Management and More Writing 30-day training.

Over the next 30 days, we'll be going over ways to improve your time management skills so you can become more productive. Being productive by making better use of the time you have will help you achieve your writing goals.

When we realize that so much time goes to waste without our even knowing it and we begin to learn how we can be more effective and efficient, we allow ourselves to start working toward our goals without spinning our wheels.

If you want to be successful in business or in your writing career, you'll need to handle your time management and productivity just like a manager would for his direct reports. As the CEO, you are in charge of your success. It's up to you to take your job seriously and to give it your all.

One of the things that is super-critical to your writing success is getting enough sleep. The worst thing that can happen when you sit down to write is that you have trouble focusing or staying awake to get any writing done because you're too tired.

When we're tired, it's easy to feel uninspired and unmotivated. It is also easy to feel like we've lost our creativity. Getting enough sleep on a regular basis will help you stay focused on your writing work when you do sit down to write. Do what you can to catch up on sleep on the weekends and get enough sleep during the week.

Make sure you're also doing what you can to stay energized throughout your writing sessions. Drinking plenty of water, eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep will all work together to give you the energy to work on your writing. You owe it to yourself to set yourself up for success.

    Today's Task

Focus on getting regular, quality sleep.

    Day 2

Part of being productive and efficient is knowing to set a schedule. The more you schedule, the more productive you will be.

So, today, we're talking about setting a schedule that will work for you.

Let's start with a couple questions:

How much time do you want to devote to your writing?

How much time can you physically devote to your writing?

I know we all want to write 8+ hours a day. But if you have a part-time or full-time job or other commitments, you'll need to take a step back and work with the amount of time you can actually spend on your writing.

Even if you have 8+ hours a day to write, developing a schedule will help you make the most of your writing sessions and your day.

Once we determine how much time you can physically devote to your writing, we can then develop a schedule based on your writing goal. We can also start working on building that time up to get closer to your ideal writing time.

This training will teach you how to make better use of your time so you can take advantage of available writing time.

Let's say you can devote two hours each day to your writing. Maybe you plan to write for an hour in the morning and
