About this ebook
Farncis is skilled at deception and trickery, but he might have gone too far this time. Not only is he trying to swindle the Emperor, but he's impersonating one of the most powerful and ill-tempered mages in the land to do it. If only he hadn't fallen for Princess Mindra, he might have set his odds for success at fifty-fifty. Now he must push his charm and quick wit to the limit to avoid a very unpleasant and drawn-out death. Will his talents, and help from an unlikely source, be enough to save him?

Though no single genre can contain him, he's got a soft spot in his heart for Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy with dark elements. After living on Maui and in Southern California, he got sick of the mild weather and moved home to eastern Nebraska, where he lives with his wife, a bunch of kids, and second pet tortoise--the first one ran away.

Farncis had fun with his little jape, until he overheard an offhand comment from one of the real wizards.
Nasty fellow, the Emperor. If his mood’s foul today, somebody’s losing their head.

Hoping he didn’t sound too shrill, Farncis stage-laughed at the banter, as it dawned on him how far out of his league he’d gotten himself. Here, in the Emperor’s throne room, stood he, several decades younger and magnitudes of scale less powerful than the other robe-clad men whose magical ability practically oozed from their pores.
Nearby, two score of stout oaken chairs faced the dais and the currently unoccupied throne. Just as the icy fingers of doubt began to creep into Farncis’ thoughts, a commotion at a side door caused him to look up.
