The Pyramid Predicament - Jessica Sara Campbell

    Chapter 1

It was a dreary day , pouring rain. Sylvia just listened to the steady thump, thump, thump of the raindrops on the roof of her home. Ever since last year’s big adventure, Sylvia had found herself feeling less and less of a need to escape the moment she was in. She still read her favorite books, but she found that she more enjoyed to just be a part of every moment around her. She had found enjoyment in her grandparents’ routine of breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same time every day. She found more enjoyment in the little things that she had found so mundane before her adventure. She now had a newfound appreciation for her home, her school, her era...

Sylvia and her grandparents had, just last year, unexpectedly traveled through time. Though they lived in current day London, they had woken up, looked outside, and found themselves in Medieval London. The Willifred family had met wonderful new friends along the way; Sylvia smiled as she remembered the kind hearted ruffian Merideth, who had helped them escape back to their current time period, and the sweet young lady Olivia, without whom they would never have been able to come back home. The most special gift of all from their adventure, besides a newfound appreciation for home and family, was Sylvia’s new adopted brother Bayard. Bayard was from Medieval London originally, and he had been raised by a pack of wolves. After living with the Willifred’s for about a year now, Bayard had come to understand the modern-day customs, and the Willifred’s were happy to accept him as a part of their family.

This day in particular was a Saturday. There was nothing overly abnormal or out of place. The sky wasn’t particularly anything. The day had no call for something special. It simply felt like a normal Saturday. There was a slight draw to feel tired, perhaps due to the rain. This weekend in particular, however, was most exciting for Sylvia. You see her grandparents had, for the first time in as far as Sylvia could remember, planned an exciting visit to London City to see the Museum that was in town.

Susan and Freddy had changed too since their adventure, and realized that perhaps Sylvia, and Bayard too, needed some excitement to spice their daily life up a bit from time to time. Currently in school, Sylvia and Bayard were both studying ancient Egyptian history. Last year they both had difficulties in this subject, and this year was a more advanced project for them. They each had a report to write; Sylvia was assigned to write about the Egyptian Pharaoh King Tutankhamen and was able to find lots of interesting information. Bayard, however, was assigned the Egyptian god Horus to write on and he was having more difficulty. Currently, an Egyptian museum had made its way into town in London. Therefore, a trip was planned. And Sylvia was very excited to enjoy this outing with her family and, most of all, her new brother, Bayard.

Sylvia was very excited to see a replica of the tomb of King Tutankhamen. She knew it was just a replica and she shouldn’t get her hopes up too much, but she was still very excited.

Rawr! Sylvia was startled out of her thoughts as her brother Bayard appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and pounced on her, growling like a wolf as he did so. He wrestled his sister off of the bed where she was resting and they both fell to the carpeted floor of her room, laughing. Sylvia chuckled and kicked him away playfully. Bayard’s gentleness skills in day to day life still left a bit to be desired.

You goofball. Sylvia said from the ground, giggling. She stood and began to straighten out her blouse and smooth her hair, We’re going to get you civilized one of these days. She said and plopped back down on her bed.

Bayard stuck his head back up above the mattress, panting and grinning, with his hair sticking out comically.

"I am, civilized, sister." He said, licking his hand and patting his hair back down. Sylvia raised her eyebrow at him but couldn’t help smiling.

Whatever. She said and threw one of her pillows at him. Are you excited to go to the museum?

Bayard frowned slightly and sat down at the edge of the mattress. The smile disappeared from his young face and he looked up at the low hanging ceiling in Sylvia’s bedroom. His dark brown eyes had a serious, deeply thoughtful look.

I hope that I do not accidentally misbehave around all of those people. I hope I do not embarrass you and our grandparents, or knock anything over. He said quietly.

Sylvia rolled her eyes, flipped over on her belly, and sighed, "Bayard. That’s so silly. You don’t have to worry about that okay? Just try to relax and enjoy yourself. You’ll be fine."

Bayard glanced back at Sylvia and shared a half smile, You really think so?

Sylvia grinned, "I know so brother. C’mon, it’s almost time for breakfast."

Just then she heard her grandmother.

Sylvia, Bayard! It’s time for breakfast! You too Freddy! Susan called sweetly from downstairs.

Bayard sat up immediately in his typical wolf-like fashion in which he was raised and ran downstairs with great speed and agility, tripping only slightly down the stairs with excitement. He accidentally rammed into Freddy on his way down, who rammed into the wall and cursed slightly under his breath. Freddy was not incredibly cheerful in the morning until he had his morning coffee or tea.

Sylvia watched this take place from the top of the stairs and giggled to herself before lightly padding down the white carpeted stairs herself.

Sylvia noticed before entering the kitchen that her grandmother had opened the drapes to the window and took a moment just to look outside at the peach tree. Susan now did this every morning at the nearest opportunity. She had done this every morning since they had returned from their adventure in Medieval London. Sylvia thought it probably comforted her grandmother to see her home and be reassured by the steady presence of normalacy.

When she entered the kitchen Bayard was already seated at the table, gobbling down his eggs and toast as quickly as he could, Susan hovering above him holding Bayard’s unused fork and butter knife and attempting to grab his attention long enough to show him how to use them properly, for what felt like the hundredth time.

Now, dear, you want to- Susan started slowly, then stopped abruptly to pick up a chunk of scrambled egg from the ground that Bayard had unintentionally dropped to the floor in his haste to eat.

Well, let me just toss this first then... Susan said quietly.

Bayard was not intentionally trying to be messy or rude. In fact, he had actually improved quite dramatically in his dining table etiquette since joining the Willifred family. Sitting up on a chair rather than on the floor and using a plate were both huge improvements that Bayard had come to learn. He was actually quite proud of himself for sitting at the table.

Sylvia smiled as she watched Bayard
