    THE BIRTH OF OUR SAVIOUR

    The Angel Appears to Mary

OUR SAVIOR, the Lord Jesus Christ, was born nineteen hundred years ago, in a far-off country which has ever since been called the Holy Land. Many years before His birth, prophets had foretold that God would send a Redeemer into the world to show mankind the way of salvation. Good men believed the words of these prophets, and longed earnestly for the coming of the promised Saviour. It was naturally thought that He would appear as a mighty ruler or king, but God in His wisdom intended otherwise. His Son came into the world as a helpless babe, just like any of us, and was born in poverty and obscurity.

Mary, who was chosen to be the earthly mother of Jesus, was a young maiden who lived in Nazareth, a village of Galilee. Although she was a descendant of the great King David, she was not rich, but she and her kindred loved God, and lived piously and justly.

The angel Gabriel was sent to tell Mary that by the power of the Holy Spirit she should become the mother of a Child who should be great, and should be called the Son of the Most High, and should establish a kingdom of which there would be no end. Mary was filled with fear and wonder, but she answered the angel, and said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done unto me as the Lord hath said.

Then the angel left her, and Mary went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. Elizabeth was the wife of a priest named Zacharias, to whom the angel Gabriel had also appeared, and announced that he should have a son named John, who was to go before the Lord to prepare the people for His coming. Mary stayed three months with Elizabeth, and then returned to her own home, and soon afterward a son was born to Elizabeth. This son when he grew to be a man was known as John the Baptist.

Mary was betrothed to a man named Joseph, and he too was of the line of David. He was a carpenter, and was a good and just man. An angel of the Lord appeared to him also in a dream, and told him of the Babe that was to be born, and commanded that He should be called
