Jo Carey
Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

Turf Terror - Jo Carey
CHAPTER ONE
Keep your eyes closed,
Noah said, leading her by the hand.
Noah, where are we going?
Mari asked.
It's a surprise.
He stopped with her back against his chest. You can look now.
She looked around then turned to face him.
I'm not sure about this, Noah. Won't your father be pissed if we mess up the turf?
It's grass, Mari. We can't really mess it up. You said you wanted to do it outside. We've got acres of green grass and a great view of the stars,
he said, pointing to the sky overhead.
What if someone sees us?
Be honest, that's part of the fun,
he said, but no one's out here at night.
Noah's family owned Envy Turf Farm, and he had acres of lush grass at his disposal. He sat down and pulled Mari down beside him. He put his arm around her shoulders and pointed out some of the constellations. After a while, he laid back on the grass and Mari followed suit.
It's really quiet out here,
she said, and the stars are beautiful.
I thought you might like it,
he said.
Their makeout session escalated, and Noah stripped off his jeans. Doesn't the grass tickle?
she asked.
Try it and find out.
I'm not sure,
she said.
About me or the outdoor thing?
She kissed him. The outdoor thing. It's exciting but a little scary.
He pulled her close, hoping his kisses would distract her from her worries. It seemed to be working until Noah felt something crawling up his leg. He was hesitant to say anything or move to knock it off because he didn't want to give Mari a reason to change her mind about their plans for the night. He went back to kissing her.
Noah couldn't ignore the sensation of something crawling on his legs any longer. He bent one leg and used his foot to try to dislodge whatever was crawling on him. It didn't work.
Why are you squirming around so much? See the grass is tickling you, isn't it?
He tried to ignore it, but it felt like more and more things were crawling over his legs. He didn't want to break the spell but the decision was made for him, when Mari jumped up, waving her arms around. Get it off me. What is it? Help me, Noah.
It's just a bug or something, Mari. I'll get it. Just calm down,
Noah said. When he stood up, he saw that both of his legs were covered in what looked like worms, but it felt like they were biting. He ignored his own discomfort and pulled one of the creatures off Mari's arm. It left a small trickle of blood behind.
Run for the truck,
he said, picking up his jeans but not bothering to put them back on. He grabbed her hand and pulled her across the turf.
They'd made it maybe halfway back before Noah collapsed. Noah, come on,
Mari said. We need to get inside the truck.
She looked down and saw that his legs were covered with the writhing worms. She touched his face and talked to him but he wouldn't wake up. His legs were swelling up. She needed to get the worms off him and get help, but she had no idea how to do either of those things. She ran back to the truck and got a couple of bottles of water from behind the seats. She ran back and poured the water over Noah's legs. I guess you guys don't like water,
she said as she watched the worms slither off his legs. She lifted his head. Noah, you need to get up so I can help you back to the truck.
Nothing she tried worked. She didn't want to leave him, so she pulled out her phone and called her mom. Hi, Mom. There's an emergency, and I need your help. I'll explain later, and you can punish me then, but right now Noah needs help.
She gave her mom a brief explanation and asked her to call Noah's parents. She looked around and didn't see any of the worms. She shook out Noah's pants and worked them up Noah's legs. There was no way she wanted her parents or Noah's to find Noah lying in the field in just his underwear. She figured they'd get enough grief for just being out in the field at night. As she was running back to the truck to look for a flashlight, her phone rang. Hi, Mom.
Is Noah OK?
I can't get him to wake up. I don't know what's wrong.
His dad's on the way to you, and I'm headed out to the farm. You stay safe and do what you can to help Noah.
Mari dug around in the glove box and found a flashlight. She was relieved that it worked
