Jo Carey

Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

    Ice Terror - Jo Carey

    Ice Terror

Jerry, come look at these tracks. I can’t figure out what could have made these, Bob said over his communicator. He continued examining the tracks in the ice while waiting for Jerry to join him. On a glacier, you couldn’t move anywhere quickly. Jerry approached cautiously and knelt down by the tracks with Bob.

After several minutes of examination, photographs, and measurements, Bob and Jerry concurred they were unable to identify the tracks until they returned to the lab and had more tools at their disposal.

After finishing their exploration and returning to the observation post, they met in the lab to start cataloging their findings of polar bear and elk movements.

Jerry, let’s bring up the photos of those tracks we couldn’t identify, let’s see if we can make any headway before we break for dinner, Bob said, anxious to solve the mystery.

They uploaded the photos from the digital camera to the PC and found the one that showed the most detail. The tracks were large and spaced very far apart. They resembled those of a polar bear in some ways, but were much larger. The space between the fore and hind paws was too great to be made by any known resident of the arctic region, but none of that was what really made the tracks unique. Polar bear tracks are usually only visible in soft snow or mud and these tracks were found in glacial ice, but that still wasn’t the most unique feature of the tracks. On the forepaws there were several circles which looked exactly like octopus suckers.

The outside doors to the post crashed open and a harried Dr. Susan Bremmerton ran into the lab and nearly collapsed into Bob’s arms as he and Jerry ran out to find the cause of the commotion.

Susan, what’s wrong? What’s happened? Where are Johan and Kendra? Bob asked.

Dr. Bremmerton was one of the world’s foremost experts on polar bears. She and Bob had become close during the expedition, and he was worried to see her so upset. Susan sobbed into his shoulder and gasped for breathe. She had no pack with her and looked as though she had been running for some time.

Jerry and Bob helped Dr. Bremmerton to a chair in the lounge, and Jerry went to get her a hot drink to help warm her up and calm her down. Once she was breathing more normally, she explained what happened. Susan’s team headed out that morning to scout for signs of animal activity on the north end of the glacier. They found a few polar bear and moose tracks, but nothing out of the ordinary. The team made lunch in the shelter of a small cave they found just off the edge of the glacier.

As they were finishing their meal and packing up their gear, they heard noises coming from deeper in the cave. Thinking it might be a bear awakened by the smell of their cooking, Susan and Kendra continued packing the gear while Johan took the rifle and went deeper into the cave to check out the source of the noise.

A few minutes later the women were ready to go, but Johan had not returned. They were heading deeper into the cave to find him when they heard a terrible scream followed by gunshots then silence. They dropped their gear and ran toward the sounds in search of their colleague. They rounded a bend and found the sleeve of Johan’s
