    Book Overview

The Alchemist was written by Paulo Coelho within two weeks in 1987; it was later published in Brazil by a small company which didn’t gain a lot of traction. The publisher gave the rights back to the author because of this failure; however, Coelho submitted it once again to a different publisher—with Harper Collins eventually getting their hands on the manuscript. It didn’t sell as much at first, but not until they published a translation in French in the early 1990s. This translation became one of the French bestsellers lists and it was here that it became discovered to be one of the best novels of its time and gained its place beside other classics.

The message that the story shares revolves around that of hope and believing in one’s own dreams. Readers around the world related to this message and inspired them to follow their dreams. Since then, it had been translated into almost 100 languages and has been acclaimed by celebrities, literary giants, and politicians alike.

The story in itself is short
