Courage & Cowardice - Dr Douglas M. Baker
Courage on the Path
If you were to ask me what two virtues are paramount in the treading of the Path of Ancient Wisdom to the feet of the Master, I would answer without hesitation that the two paramount virtues on this harsh journey are those of courage and persistence.
The world owes much to its men and women of courage. We do not mean physical courage, in which a man is at least equal to a bulldog in his ability to dispose of physical problems about him. Such courage we are not dealing with here.
It is the courage that displays itself in silent effort and endeavour that we are talking about: the courage that dares to endure and suffer all for such simple things as truth and beauty.
It is the courage that is more truly heroic than the achievements of any physical valour. It is the courage that may never be rewarded by honours and titles or laurels, but when it is, those laurels are sometimes steeped in blood as much as those won by physical courage and valour.
It is the moral courage that characterises the highest order of manhood and womanhood on this planet. The courage to seek and to speak the truth no matter what the circumstances. The courage to be just, and the courage to do one’s duty.
Without courage it’s quite useless treading the Path. You are in a cul-de-sac, a blind alley if you have no courage, because of the very nature of the Path of unfoldment which we tread.
That path was created by men of courage, and as you tread the Path of spiritual unfoldment you will make that path a little stronger, and a little longer for those who come after you. You will help build that path for others.
You will, as it were, leave a rope behind you to guide those who follow you across the difficult ways that lie ahead for them. Those who follow you are those whom we call on the Path the little ones, our younger brothers.
You must leave behind you a rope, a path that will help them across the swollen rivers of the emotions that you have had to win through. You must leave a rope for them to climb the cliffs of man’s mind; you have to do that little service.
Every step of progress in the history of our race has been made in the face of tremendous opposition and difficulty. Every step of that progress has been achieved and secured by men of great bravery and valour; by leaders who were in the van of the thought of this planet; by great discoverers and great patriots, and great workers in all walks of
