About this ebook

What had Alan told Andrew?

Her ex's revelations to Andrew Winter meant that her entire past was now an open book to the man who wanted to destroy her. With a little digging he'd have more than enough dirt to ruin her forever in Stephen's eyes. Somehow she has to defuse the situation with Stephen before Andrew can lay out the sordid details of her earlier life.

But the whole world seems to be conspiring to steal every chance she has to talk to the love of her life alone, and then her worst fears are realized. Andrew has left town on personal business and flown to Midland. Alan had said that he'd told Andrew everything. Everything meant Midland.

Everything meant her mother.

    Winter’s Storm

    WHAT HAD ALAN TOLD ANDREW?

Celeste’s heart was hammering in panic as she chased after her ex-boyfriend. She hit the door running and stumbled out into the hall, grateful that she’d worn flats. If she had hit the glassy-smooth granite tiles in the hallway in heels at that speed, she would have broken her neck for sure.

There was no sign of Alan when she scanned the halls. Evidently he was in as big a hurry to leave as she was to catch up to him. She ran towards the elevators, dodging past men and women in expensive business clothes who stared after her as though she was something escaped from the zoo. When she turned the corner, he was standing in front of the bank of elevators. One set of doors was just opening and he’d taken a step forward.

    Alan!

She was just in time to grab his arm from behind and yank him back. As the elevator door slid shut he turned on her, his face twisted in a smirk.

Why, Celeste. Chasing after me? I’m terribly flattered. What would your billionaire boyfriend say if he could see us now?

Cut the crap. What did you tell him?

Me? Oh, I just told him all of the things that you told me. He knew a lot of it already, but I think I gave him a couple of eye openers. Not to mention more leads to follow.

Her stomach twisted, and the bitterness of bile crept up in her throat. Damn you. Haven’t you already caused enough trouble in my life?

Alan’s eyes went cold and he jerked free of her grip. You know, I’d intended to cut you some slack for old time’s sake—right up until I got a look at the brunette in the break room as I came in. When I realized that you were the one who put her up to that little stunt at the bar to make me look bad in front of my girlfriend, though, the gloves came off. You’ve got nobody but yourself to blame for that one.

Celeste wanted to scream, and bit her tongue to keep her mouth shut. There was no sense in trying to explain that Rachel had done it all on her own. He wouldn’t believe it, and it didn’t matter now, anyway. The damage was already done. Beside them the elevator dinged, and the doors opened.

Go, she told him bitterly. Just get out.

He stepped inside, and when he turned back towards her the smirk was back. If you get lonely after your boyfriend kicks you to the curb, give me a call. I suppose I can throw a pity fuck your way.

He was still laughing as the doors closed, and Celeste headed back to the office with her feet weighted down by dread. The long, echoing halls seemed to stretch out forever into the distance ahead of her. Was there even any point now in going back? Andrew would no doubt spill everything to Stephen as soon as he possibly could, and she had blown her chance of beating him to the punch because of her dithering. She had been so afraid that she would lose Stephen that it had paralyzed her from doing the right thing. Now she was going to pay for it.

Pushing through the frosted glass door, she ignored the curious look from the receptionist who had just watched her run by. In the interior lobby Andrew stood just outside of his office, calmly looking out over the Houston skyline. He must have caught Celeste’s reflection in the glass, because he spoke without turning.

You surprise me again, Celeste. I didn’t think you’d come back. But it won’t be for long. You had your chance to make peace with this and go your own way quietly. Now it’s my turn, and now when you go there won’t be anything quiet about it.

He threw her a smug look over his shoulder as he disappeared into his office. She was so screwed. For a moment she leaned
