      Chapter 1

      Roger DeHavilland enlarged the image on his laptop screen and allowed a small smile to soften his stern expression. Softness wasn't something he would admit, although he did have favourites in his herd, and those always received his own special definition of tenderness. It usually surfaced as a touch, maybe a gentle pat of affection, sometimes he contained his ardour and directed his more hostile urges to the less favoured creatures that surrounded him, giving some small respite to those who pleased him.

      This one could become a favourite he told himself as he scrolled through one image after another, she was definitely well proportioned, she was slender and light yet his experienced eye told him that the widening of the pelvis hinted that she would handle breeding without complications. Her lines were close to perfection. The udders are a little on the small side he sighed, but that was the only defect. And not really a defect he reminded himself, the udders would swell nicely with his help, once the milk began to flow they would fill out, and some of his very best milkers had begun their time with him on the petite side.

      Roger scanned her pedigree, pretty unspectacular and ordinary breeding but there were other aspects for consideration. Her age was definitely in her favour, and if she settles into the herd without complications I can see at least ten good years of production, especially if I keep her bred regularly.
