      Chapter 1

      It all began at the office Christmas party, but unlike so many before her, Marion cheated to save her marriage, not leave it!

      Their mortgage had turned into a millstone. A great weight that gradually yet inexorably dragged Graham and Marion deep into the depths of despair, and like lines of toppled dominoes one calamity triggered another, and another.

      For Marion it had been a reduction in her hours, and the rest had been welcomed at the time because Graham had a good job, he was covering their outgoings easily... but that first event had soon led them into an inescapable downward spiral. Graham was next to bring home bad news, redundancy loomed, so the couple dived into a frantic job search as their small saving began to trickle away.

      Eventually Graham had found work, but it was a significant reduction in salary. They were bringing in the cash, but just not enough, each month they spent more than they earned.

      The solution would be a promotion, Graham had to climb the corporate ladder in his new company, but he was the new guy, so many others had the edge and advantage over him... office politics, seniority, the old boys’ network, effectively they all knew which ass to kiss to get ahead! It was fruitless and soul destroying, but still he applied for every advancement
