      Chapter 1

      Penny laid her rented bicycle against a low stone wall and sighed in contentment as she stared out across the azure water of the Libyan Sea. Behind her lay the path back to the opposite coast and Heraklion, ahead and far beyond sight were distant Libya and Egypt and the African Continent, and all around her rose the ragged peaks of Crete's Dikti Mountains.

      This was a perfect idea she told herself as she unzipped her rucksack and delved deep to find the pita bread she had wrapped that morning along with a plastic container of tomato, olives and feta. It felt as though she had all of Crete to herself and by following a network of mountain tracks she had managed to avoid all the usual tourist traffic, now she found herself with a panoramic view. To the north was the Sea of Crete, to the south the Libyan Sea, and she was close to her goal, the Psychro Cave set high in the Dikti Mountains, allegedly the birthplace and nursery of Zeus. The place where he was hidden away from his father the god Cronus, a necessity considering Cronus had heard a prophesy that he would be overthrown by his son, a fear that drove him to eat the babies he fathered. It ended up to be a prophesy fulfilled as Zeus ousted him from power, but that didn't really concern Penny, she didn't believe in such things, she simply wanted to explore the caves just so that she could say Been there, done that!

      Earlier in the week she had roamed the ancient site of Knossos, the legendary home of the labyrinth. The place where King Minos had imprisoned his monstrous son the Minotaur, or rather than son, the offspring of a mating between his wife and the magical Cretan Bull, the grotesque child had been his punishment for arrogance and deceit… at the whim of a capricious god!
