      E is for Elsa

      Chapter 1

      Cool name... just like that lion... or was it a tiger, I dunno, one of them anyway!

      Elsa sighed quietly and nodded. Lioness! she corrected.

      Over fifty years since the film had been made about Elsa the lion cub who was saved and raised by Joy Adamson out in the Kenyan bush, over fifty years since Born Free... how long did it take for name association to die... her parents had a lot to answer for... giving her such a name!

      It could have been worse, she always told herself when animals in popular films came to mind, They could have called me Lassie!

      But the constant references had prompted an interest in big cats, not professional of course, a girl born and raised in central Manchester didn't get that many opportunities to work with wildlife, but it had aroused a desire, almost a primal need... she longed to see them, not just on the television or in a zoo... she needed to see them in the wild, out in the bush... in Africa.

      And while I'm thinking about such a trip, to see wild lions, I guess I should plan on Kenya, it's where Elsa was from anyway... it just wouldn't seen right anywhere else!

      It had become Elsa's goal, a Kenyan safari crammed with wild experiences... but she would never have dared to dream just how wild it was destined to get!

      Jomo Kenyatta Airport buzzed with activity and Elsa breathed in her first taste of Africa. Oppressive heat bore down on her like a physical entity, the air was filled with the scents of humanity, sweat and aggression, anxiety, and the more pleasant aromas of freshly brewed coffee and local pastries. She shuffled through passport control from the cosmopolitan and multicultural terminal building to the sheer singularity of arrivals. It was a culture shock, even for a girl from such a mixed society as central Manchester, she had seen her fair share of black faces, but to step out and be confronted by the reality of Nairobi was an eye opener. Suddenly she was definitely a minority, her fellow Caucasian passengers disappearing swiftly in the crowds like grains of pale sand lost in a deep dark ocean.

      Don't book anything in advance, she had been warned by one website specialising in travel on a budget, wait until arrival, there will always be cheaper options, ask the locals, walk around and check different hotel rates... you don't have to stick to the popular choices... to wander from the beaten track is often far more rewarding than the path well travelled!

      Standing beside her backpack and looking a little lost Elsa had signalled the sharks as the scent of her intimidation and uncertainty drifted like blood in the water.

      Taxi, hotel, nightclub, safari, park entry tickets... change your Dollars or Euros or Pounds to Shillings, best rate in town! The offers bombarded her from every side, hands clasped the straps to her back pack as a taxi driver decided to take the initiative. Elsa snatched
