David Hughes

David Hughes trained as a letterpress typesetter in the 1970s, gaining a (now obsolete) City and Guilds qualification at Kitson College of Technology in Leeds, UK. He worked on the Evening Press in York and the South London Press as a Linotype operator. After retraining on the computerised "new technology" he hung up his apron in the early 90s, mainly due to boredom! He keeps in touch with the letterpress scene through his printers' nostalgia website "Metal Type" and keeps up with the practical side of things producing letterpress business cards at Metal Type Printing.

    DEDICATION

    To David Thomas and Sarah,

and the next generation in this journey

of faith and grace in Christ

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

TO MY SAVIOR … Jesus, who is the reason I write these words and share these thoughts. May they help show how truly great your love and grace are for those who you call your greatest treasure – us!

TO MY FAMILY … Lisa, thank you for saying yes all those years ago – I would not want to share this journey with anyone else by my side … and to our children, David Thomas and Sarah – I am truly blessed to be your dad!

TO MY SPIRITUAL HERITAGE (who are all a part of that great cloud of witnesses) … Dad and Mom (John and Marian Hughes), thank you for unconditional love and the prayers, encouragement and support to trust and follow Jesus … and to Scotty Todd, a true spiritual father in the faith who invested in a young man and showed me how to truly enjoy the journey of life in Christ!

TO MY LOCAL CHURCH FELLOWSHIP … Thank you for the friendship, support and adventures of faith we’ve shared all through the years, and for the privilege to minister among you – you all are a great bunch that I am so blessed to be able to be sharing this journey with!

TO THE NUDGE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO WRITE … I’m so grateful for a simple statement from my brother and friend Val Rodriguez during our fellowship at lunch that sparked the writing of this book … you need to write down this stuff you are talking about, if for no one else - for your own children! So, for David Thomas and Sarah, and anyone else who may read this, I felt nudged to write.

    Preface

    Horizons

IT WAS A TYPICAL AFTERNOON, nothing seemingly out of the ordinary about the day. I was at a local gas station in my home town of Rocky Mount, North Carolina filling up the tank on my burgundy four-door 1977 Chevy Nova. That was my first set of wheels that had been provided to me from my dad when I received my driver’s license. I was happy to have that car because it gave me a new sense of freedom and got me from here-to-there (wherever here was and wherever there needed to be at the time). That’s ultimately what mattered to me back then as a young seventeen year old. As I stood there pumping gas I looked out toward the horizon and it seemed to capture my gaze for a moment. I was looking down the road that would take you out to the highway that led out of my home town. There were people in vehicles of all types coming and going, like I said, just a normal day. But in that moment what was just a normal day like any other became a day that I will always remember.

As I looked toward the horizon, I sensed the Spirit of the Lord impress on the heart of this seventeen year old young man something that would change this day and my future perspective forever. The Lord simply spoke and impressed into my heart these words … Son, there is so much of your future in Me that lies beyond your horizons. Well, the truth is some might say that is not a very profound or deep statement and I must admit, it is very simple. Yet, it was not only the words, but the source from which I believed they came from that made all the difference. I was a young man with a growing passion and desire for the Lord who believed I had heard the Spirit speak to me … and that changes everything.

Horizons. This word now seemed to carry new depth, new meaning, new pondering and thought to me. Just what was the Lord saying? What was the Spirit trying to show me? That was over thirty years ago and I am still learning the answer to that. I’m now standing in and experiencing many things in the Lord that at that time were in fact still beyond my horizons. They had yet to be experienced. But I also realize there is still so much more of this journey to unfold.

Horizons have so much to do with perspective, with the vantage point from which we see things. Those things beyond our horizon are not non-existent, they are just not yet experienced. This journey of faith and grace in the life of Christ is just like that. We need the Lord through the Holy Spirit to change our vantage point. To enable us to see what is unseen. This may sound a little crazy, but that is just what He does. He enables us to see Jesus through the eyes of faith, so that we may know Him. So do we see through the natural eyes of reason and logic; of emotion and feeling or do we see through the eyes of Spirit and Truth; of love and grace. Is the perspective of our gaze natural or divine?

The words and thoughts of this book are meant to take us on a journey – an adventure of faith! By God’s grace I endeavor to share some of the things I’ve seen and experienced in the Lord on my own compelling adventure of faith in Him. And hopefully they will encourage you in your journey. One of the greatest joys is to know that in Him we are not alone, but we share the journey with one another. In the body of Christ we are fellow travelers who can find encouragement in the Lord through each other. But mind you, as I share of this journey I’ve been on, I realize that it’s certainly not all that there is to be said or seen or experienced. We have only begun to tap into the vastness of the life that is … Christ in you, the hope of glory!

    1 Corinthians 10:11 says …

"Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction." [NASB]

This scripture was written with reference to the children of Israel and their experiences and interactions with the Lord. Through the following pages we will be traveling with them in their journey as God led them out of Egypt, through the wilderness and into the Promised Land. Our goal is to open their photo album and look at a few snapshots taken along the way and through these pictures may we see examples that illustrate and bring to light Christ’s life in and through us now. God showed them His love, His mercy, His grace – He showed Israel that He was commit-ted to them … and He is to us! They were given a promise that lay beyond their horizon, but there came a day that they stepped into that promise and it became a reality! In Christ we have already stepped into a new day – now through the Holy Spirit may that day fully dawn on us that we may experience what is already true through Christ in us and us in Christ (see 2 Peter 1:19).

I pray we see God’s love and mercy and grace revealed in Jesus and the priceless gift of eternal life through His death, burial and resurrection. For us we must realize that the Promised Land spiritually represents, not a piece of real estate, but a person – Jesus! Our need certainly was not acreage and land, but new life. Jesus and the life we live in Him is our Promised Land! All of humanity desperately needed real hope and peace – we needed a savior! As we will see in the chapters ahead we have come fully into union with Christ as a child of God. Jesus truly did accomplish a finished work – we have been given all things that pertain unto life and godliness in Christ. We are the recipients of a new life in spirit … of genuine love … of radical grace … of total forgiveness … of true peace … and a wonderfully fulfilled purpose through the gift of authentic relationship with Jesus.

Now it is true that spiritually we have fully entered into the Promised Land of life in Christ, yet the realization and experience of what that means in so many regards is still beyond our horizon. The Holy Spirit wants our experience of Christ to catch up to our reality in Christ. We are totally forgiven, but do we live forgiven? … we are loved, but do we live loved? … we have peace with God, but do we live with peace of mind and heart? Feelings of guilt, feelings of abandonment, feelings we will just never have peace or security – they are just that, feelings. They are feelings brought on by our perspective, but they are not
