- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Genre: Critical IssuesMedia: Graphic DesignUse: this is a super cool book to talk about people who bring joy to others, or how there are some children who don't get to go to school because they have medical problems that are more important to deal with. This would be a cool book to introduce the idea of a class becoming pen pals with students their age that are in children's hospitals most of the time if not all of the time. Critique: I thought this book was a great way for students to learn about the medical issues that affect students their age. Often I think children believe that these things don't exist or don't affect them, and informative books like this aren't meant to scare children but show them that the things they find too distant from them are actually realities they can make a difference in or just be aware of and build their ability to have empathy. This would also be a great book to share with a student who is diagnosed with epilepsy to help them feel related to and to help them understand the emotions they are experiencing.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a fantastic book for explaining to children what epilepsy is, the different types and how it is treated. The pictures are beautiful. They would make any child want to read the book. A little less pink might have been more attractive for some boys, but the main character is a boy so that will probably balance things out for most kids. I would want to read it to my child if they were facing epilepsy. It uses fantasy elements, but the information it gives is very informative and realistic while remaining very hopeful. I checked my library and they have only two books on epilepsy for children and both are informational only and directed to older kids. The book points out that one in 25 children have epilepsy. I am so glad a book like this is available. I requested it because I have a friend with a fourth grade son who has epilepsy.
