I'm a young man who loves to lose myself in all the stories in my head. Whenever I emerge from the playground in my mind, I can be found spending time with my family and furry baby boy, Smokey Jack. I love to read and write, and have loved both with a passion since I learned to do either. You'd be hard pressed to find me without a book in my hand or loaded up on my Kindle. If my nose isn't in a book, my eyes are glued to a computer screen, churning out idea after idea. I look forward to bringing you interesting and entertaining stories for years to come! And if you're so inclined, I enjoy interacting with my readers on my various social media accounts and email: https://www.facebook.com/authordonte/ https://twitter.com/DonteMMcNeal dontemm@yahoo.com

    Home Away From Home

    T hat was...

Stupid, I know, Nicholas muttered. He shook his head and glanced over at his best friend. Why would he think he could talk about Ren like that?

Leone rubbed the back of his neck. I get that, but did you have to crack old boy's jaw?

Nicholas scoffed and rolled his shoulders, wincing at the pain. With the way he'd gotten slammed, his back would soon be sporting a new bruise. Like you weren't thinking about laying him out. Since when do you pass up a fight, or just let guys talk about Serenity?

You know I don't, but all he said was she was cute. If you fight everybody who says that, you'll have to fight everybody in the freaking city.

I don't mind people calling her cute, but when they say it 'cause they want to get with her...

Leone nodded. Nicholas left it at that because, while he knew his friend didn't want anyone getting with Serenity, his reasons weren't the same as Nicholas' were. Nicholas saw the way they looked at each other when they thought no one was watching, but since Leone hadn't come to him about it, he just left it alone. It's not like he'd mind if they started dating, but neither of them seemed like they would make a move.

Well, now that my knuckles are hurting and my ribs are sore, I'm thinking that I'm gonna skip that abandoned house on Third.

Nicholas shrugged and rubbed his knuckles. Yeah, that's cool. I feel like taking a nap. Wanna head to your place?

Leone gasped, his hand over his heart. The great Nicholas Black is tired? He chuckled as Nicholas punched his arm. But yeah, that sounds good, Leone said.

The streets leading away from the park were riddled with cracks and potholes, so the duo opted to steer clear of the street and strolled down the sidewalk. It boasted numerous cracks, too, but they didn't have to worry about potholes. Leone glanced around the rundown city of Gaylene and observed how nearly every neighborhood in the city worse for wear. The closer they got to his home though, the nicer the landscape became. There were still abandoned houses with boarded-up windows and graffiti tags everywhere, but it wasn't as bad as it was in South Gaylene where Nicholas stayed. Though they only lived roughly a mile apart, their neighborhoods were very different.

Nicholas' grip on the bat he'd taken from the group he and Leone had fought tightened the moment he noticed a group of kids clad in purple and gold. That a new crew or something?

Leone followed his gaze and shrugged. Probably. Haven't seen purple and gold before.

Nicholas kicked at a rock on the sidewalk as he jerked his head toward a side street. He didn't want to confront any gangs, new or otherwise. Leone nodded and picked up the pace. Once they were one street over, their stride slowed. Nicholas flipped the bat absentmindedly and checked behind them.

How many gangs can one city have before it's too many? Leone muttered, stealing a look behind them as well.

Right! Nicholas answered. East Side Vices, Southern Rebels, Royals, Third Street Riders. It goes on and on, man, and now there's a new one starting up?

How the hell can they even start new gangs with so many already around? Leone wondered aloud.

Freaking crazy, bro. Nicholas' shoulders relaxed a bit when Leone's house came into view. Ren can't even walk to the store by herself 'cause she's scared she might get jumped or something.

    "She's scared?"

Nicholas snorted at the sideways glance Leone gave him. "Okay, fine, I'm scared something like that'll happen to her. But can you blame me? She's small, mouthy, and ain't afraid to fight. That's a recipe for disaster and you know it."

    True, Leone conceded.

Nicholas knew firsthand how mouthy she could be. It was one of her more endearing qualities. But even he had to admit her personality got her into trouble, and in Gaylene, trouble had a way of multiplying like a barn full of rabbits in heat. And if trouble found Serenity, that meant it would find him and Leone, because there was nothing that the two of them wouldn't do for her.

Leone jumped over the low metal fence surrounding his house, while Nicholas merely opened the squeaky gate and walked through, chuckling at the display. You know, I'm just waiting for the day you just eat it after getting caught on that gate. One of these days, my prayers will be answered.

Yeah, keep dreaming, kid, Leone said. I am an acrobatic genius. You'll never see me eat it. He jumped up the two stairs in front of the house, reached for the door, and fell forward before he could push it open.

Nicholas snickered as Serenity caught him before he could fall. Oh yeah, acrobatic genius. For sure.

Leone rolled his eyes at the wisecrack. Hey, Ren.

What happened to your face? She grabbed Leone's hands with a frown. Her delicate lips thinned even further as she examined both his and Nicholas' hands. You two were out fighting again, weren't you?

Well, someone had to stick up for you, Nicholas mumbled as he ruffled her thick chocolate-colored locks.

She smacked his hand away before punching him on the shoulder. And what is that supposed to mean?

That kid Devin was talking about how cute you were, and Nick snapped, Leone answered. We fought him and a couple of his friends before he ran off. Leone glanced at Quinten, his younger brother, who was sitting on the couch and sporting his usual scowl. What up, Q?

"Whoa, I snapped? Nicholas interrupted. You threw a punch same time I did!"

You had a fight just 'cause a guy called me cute? Serenity asked Nicholas. He shrugged and she sighed. So, if he called me ugly would you laugh it off?

Hell no, Nicholas said. I'd punch his teeth out.

So, you don't want people saying I look good, and you don't want them calling me ugly. Not much left, is there?

They don't have to say anything. You don't need to worry about guys right now. You just need to focus on school.

Says one of the biggest sluts in Gaylene? she prodded, earning a chuckle from Quinten, only for him to try and cover it up with a cough. You think I don't hear about you from my friends? Word travels fast for sixteen-year-olds, you know.

"Okay, I'm not going to college. I'll be lucky to graduate, but you? With that brain of yours, you're getting the hell out of here. You're going off to college and never looking back at Gaylene."

    Serenity
