    The Siege of Bright Hope

    Chasms emitting roiling smoke crisscross the plain; mounds of rubble and mangled machinery dot the landscape.

    The enemies usually remain hidden from view, but they are there, waiting and watching, ready to eliminate any who venture outside with their projectile weapons, laser rays, harmonic disruptors, razor-sharp extendable rapiers, pitfalls, nooses, deadfalls, snares, and cages. Since they have not been able to break through the dome or its buried base, they have systematically cut off all supply deliveries through orbital and land-based blockades.

    Being far from self-sufficient, the colony of Bright Hope withers under the onslaught. As they await relief, its inhabitants tighten their belts and try to avoid succumbing to despair.

    In the midst of the oppressive siege, a court is convened. The judge, seven-member jury, security personnel, and audience of curious onlookers are all gaunt, haggard, with brittle hair, dry skin, sunken cheeks,
