      At Nights Birds Hammered My Unborn

      Introduction

      The Jamaican poet Ishion Hutchinson was inspired not only by the grand literary tradition but also by the day-to-day voices that surrounded him. This is reflected in the common themes of his work. At Nights Birds Hammered My Unborn first appeared in Poetry magazine in 2014 and was later published in Hutchinson's 2016 collection House of Lords and Commons as part of a series of short poems titled The Lords and Commons of Summer. The poem is a good introduction to Hutchinson's work in that it highlights his unique poetic style and masterly use of imagery and metaphor while exploring themes of history and family.

      Author Biography

      Hutchinson was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica, on August 22, 1983. During his childhood, he spent some time on St. Thomas, where he learned about Kumina and Myal (the cultural traditions of enslaved and indentured Africans that center on commemorating one's ancestors and drawing on their power), which later became common themes in his work. Hutchinson attended the Quaker high school Happy Grove in Hordley, Jamaica, and then transferred to Titchfield High School. After receiving a bachelor's degree in English from the University of the West Indies, Hutchinson moved to the United States for graduate work. He earned his master of fine arts degree at New York University and a doctorate at the University of Utah.

      In a 2017 interview as a finalist for theNational Book Critics Circle Award, Hutchinson explained the influence of his background on his work. First, he discusses his education: "As an English student in Jamaica, coming from a colonial background, the British canon, as such, was a big part of my education,
