Published in 1958, when cummings was 64 years old, l(a
was among the last new poems published in the poet’s lifetime. At first glance, the poem appears to be either deceptively simple or maddeningly opaque; a more detailed examination reveals it to be a fine example of cummings playful experimentation with words on the page, resulting in a successful merging of form and meaning.
