Hell-Bent Fer Heaven
Hatcher Hughes
1924
Introduction
Hell-Bent fer Heaven, Hatcher Hughes's best-known work, opened on January 4, 1924, at the Klaw Theatre in New York, New York. After receiving rave reviews, the production was moved to the Frazee Theatre (also in New York), and its run continued until May 11, 1924. The following day, Hell-Bent fer Heaven was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The play was subsequently published by Harper and Brothers the same year, though the original edition has long since gone out of print. The play is not widely available. As of 2013, an undated copy, released by Samuel French as Hell Bent for Heaven, can be ordered on the publisher's website.
Hell-Bent fer Heaven is set in the Carolina mountains, on the Hunt family homestead over the course of a single afternoon, just after the end of World War I and the start of Prohibition. While these historical markers influence the plot in small ways, Hell-Bent fer Heaven is a play about faith, religion, and their use, misuse, and abuse. In this manner, the play is somewhat timeless, and its themes still resonate today. Love, jealousy, loyalty, and family ties also drive the story.
Author Biography
Harvey Hatcher Hughes was born on February 12, 1881, in Polkville, North Carolina, the tenth of eleven children born to Martha Gold Hughes and Andrew Jackson Hughes. The playwright enrolled at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1901. He often took breaks from college to earn money, writing for local newspapers and eventually teaching at the university during his senior year. Hughes received his undergraduate degree in 1907 and continued to teach there while completing his master's degree. He next moved to New York to attend Columbia University as a doctoral candidate, but he became an English lecturer and never finished his PhD.
Hughes devoted himself to teaching and writing, and he remained on the Columbia faculty for the rest of his life. He took a sabbatical from 1917 to 1920 to serve as an army captain during World War I but returned to the university immediately after completing his service. He was promoted from lecturer to assistant professor in 1928 and retained the post until 1945, specializing in playwriting and serving as founder of the Morningside Players of Columbia.
Hughes's first play, A Marriage Made in Heaven, was completed in 1918 but was never staged or published. A revised version, performed as Honeymooning or Honeymooning on High, was produced in 1927. His first produced play, Wake Up, Jonathan, was written with Elmer Rice, published in 1920, and performed
