About this ebook

  • P.J. O’Rourke is one of the defining commentators and humorists of his generation, and his books have sold over two million copies worldwide.

  • P.J.’s most recent book, How the Hell Did This Happen?, exceeded sales expectations—going into six hardcover printings and continuing to sell in paperback. The book was featured in Vanity Fair’s Hot Type, was previewed by Richard Johnson for the New York Post, and was excerpted by the Weekly Standard.

  • P.J.’s signature brand of humor first landed him at the top of the New York Times bestseller list with his takedown of politics in Washington: Parliament of Whores. None of My Business is the business-world counterpart—a lone humorist’s attempt to explain the world of finance (to hilarious effect).

  • Most chapters have appeared in an earlier version in the Stansberry Digest (400k subscribers), which is very excited about None of My Business and will be actively promoting the book. P.J. has recently partnered with Stansberry to start the web magazine American Consquences (220k subscribers), of which he is editor-in-chief.

  • P.J. speaks at events around the world and is continually building and expanding his audience as a regular contributor to the Daily Beast and NPR’s Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me.

  • Two of P.J.’s books have hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, Parliament of Whores and Give War a Chance.

Once upon a time when I was very rich I read P.J. O'Rourke and laughed. Now that I am as poor as a churchmouse and need him and this book, I can't get into it. I didn't like the style and often could not figure out what he was getting at. I haven't been able to afford new glasses recently and maybe that's the problem, but anyway I didn't finish the book.I received a review copy of "None of My Business" by P.J. O'Rourke (Grove Atlantic) through NetGalley.com.

As much as I enjoyed P.J. O'Rourke's early work, such as the classic Republican Party Reptile, this book just doesn't work for me. First, it is more a random collection of rants than a focused set of chapters about the book's ostensible subject--money, banking, debt, equity, assets, and liabilities. Along the way, he takes a Luddite-like approach to anything related to the internet or social media. While it is easy to agree with some of his observations, they are offset by other extreme statements--such as basically saying everything governmental is evil--that make the book hard to digest as a whole. I KNOW--he is a humorist, and it is supposed to be funny. And some of it is. But there is also a lot of serious social criticism here--some of it well founded--and some of it far right drivel. This book really needed a good editor who could give it some semblance of a structure. It's just a mess as is.
