      Chapter 1

      Crystal would never have described herself as the most adventurous or outgoing of girls… at least not until that fateful day in July.

      That day had begun like any other, she had woken early, showered and brushed her teeth, grabbed a slice of toast and rushed out of the flat pulling a light cardigan over her cream silk blouse. She always rushed in the morning, it was to beat the crush as she called it. That time just before 8am when it seemed that every living soul in the city tried to cram themselves into too few train carriages. She checked her watch as she skipped toward the steps that would lead her beneath the city streets and into a labyrinth of brightly tiled tunnels that pulsed warm air and ozone back and forward like the breath of some massive slumbering beast.

      One minute late she noted as the dark and angular digits clicked to 7.51am, but it's only a minute.

      Then, disaster. With a sharp crack just as she dropped down onto the first step a heel sheared clean off leaving her struggling for balance, her arms wind-milling as she fought the pull of gravity. With a gasp of relief she caught a steel handrail at her side and stared down at her ruined shoe.

      Fuck! she whispered as her watch clicked to 7.52am.

      Double Fuck! She thought, glancing back to the street behind her and the corner she would have to reach before she could see her home.

      No other choice! She reminded herself, she couldn't hobble to work, she had to race home as quickly as she could. But why rush? she added sourly as she tugged off the undamaged shoe and hoped she could make it back without stepping on glass, "Even if I run there and back… I'm
