About this ebook

Toval has defied his oath to save a conquered princess from a fellow soldier's assault. The two of them have managed to flee, but with the dreaded Black Cloaks on their trail, their chances of getting very far are slim. With the odds this stacked against them, it would be absolute insanity for them to attempt to rescue her father from an Imperial garrison.

In Part I, Imperial soldier Toval takes part in resettling citizens of Narixa, who dared to rebel against the Emperor’s authority. In the group of repatriated citizens are members of the Narixan royal family, including Indrah, a haughty princess that captures Toval’s attention. When he overhears a midnight scuffle and discovers one of his comrades attempting an assault on the princess, he loses his temper and kills the man.

As they run through the woods in Part II, Toval explains to Indrah what they’re fleeing from: the dreaded Black Cloaks. Criminals repurposed by the Empire to carry out the most distasteful tasks, the Black Cloaks have traded humanity for freedom and a license to do anything they see fit to accomplish their mission. To make matters worse, Indrah has convinced him to help free her father from a slow execution at the hands of the Empire.
