Jo Carey

Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

    River Terror - Jo Carey

    CHAPTER ONE

Jim, this is just plain boring, Sue said as she tried to get comfortable in the raft floating down the Desperation River.

You said you wanted a relaxing vacation, so relax. Enjoy the peace and quiet.

I don't know how I let you talk me into this, Sue said. To be honest, she'd been surprised when Jim asked her to spend the weekend camping and fishing in the Desperation Wilderness. Sue and Jim had been married for three years, and he spent a week in the wilderness with the guys each summer. Did you only invite me along this year because Jolene wouldn't let Tim come?

Come on, honey. You said you wanted us to spend more time together. That's what this weekend is all about.

I hate camping, I hate fishing, and I don't know how to swim. This isn't really the kind of thing I had in mind for us to do together.

Jim scooted around closer to Sue and put his arm around her. Come on, Sue. We've only been on the river a few hours. He reached around her and pulled up the line from her pole. Look at that, you caught something. He removed the hook and held up a squirming foot long creature with legs.

Keep that thing away from me, Sue said. What that hell is that? It's got legs. Fish don't have legs.

Jim looked the fish over and had to admit he didn't know what it was exactly. He put it in the fish cooler.

Even though it was only 10:00 AM, Sue reached into the drink cooler and pulled out a wine cooler. If she was going to relax, she'd need some help. She continued to squirm and fidget as they floated down the slow-moving river. Jim seemed happy fishing and drinking beer. It was warm in the sunshine, and Sue fell asleep dropping her wine cooler bottle in the bottom of the raft and stretching out her legs. She didn't realize she kicked over the fish cooler.

Jim was just glad Sue settled in to enjoy their time on the river. He shouldn't have brought her along, but he hated making the drive my himself and listening to her complain when he got home. The combination of the beers he guzzled and the sunshine mellowed him out. He had his fishing pole in the water, but he wasn't paying much attention to it.

He stretched out his leg and noticed the cooler was knocked over and all the fish were in the bottom of the raft. Damn. He got on his knees and started scooping the fish back into the cooler.

Ooouuuwww. What the hell? He looked down at Sue's strange fish hanging onto his calf. He reached for the thing and pulled it off, but it took a piece of his leg with it. He dropped the slimy thing because his leg hurt like hell.

Sue, wake up. I need some help here.

She struggled unsuccessfully to open her eyes. You told me to relax, so let me relax. She swatted his hand off her arm.

The fish or whatever the hell it was bit right through his shorts and tore off a hunk of his butt. CCCRAP. Sue, wake up. Help me kill this damn thing. Get me my knife.

Sue was drowsy, but she opened her eyes to half-mast. What's the matter with you?

That damn fish you caught is biting me.

Just throw it back in the river.

Thanks, he said sarcastically. I would if I could catch the thing. I'm in a lot of pain here. Get my knife out of the tackle box. Sue opened the tackle box and pulled out the knife Jim used to clean fish. I'll try to catch it. You be ready to stab the thing. Jim leaned on his uninjured side and looked around until he spotted the fish. He held it down with his hands afraid he might drop it if he tried to pick it up. Stab it.

Sue held the knife over her head, closed her eyes, and slammed the blade into the squirming fish and their raft.

Shit, Jim said. You punctured the raft.

You know I can't swim. You have to save me.

Shut up and let me think.

Sue looked around with wide eyes surveying the river bank on either side. There was no one else around.

Eeeewww. Where's all this blood coming from?

That damn think took a couple of chunks out of me. I'm not feelin' so good. Jim lurched forward and fell out of the deflating raft. Sue screamed and tried to pull him back in, but she was scared of falling out herself.

Tears streamed down Sue's face as she found a paddle and tried to move the raft closer to the shore. She screamed for Jim, but he didn't answer. Her cries for help brought silence as well. She was in the water now, clinging to the side of the raft that was still inflated.

Jim tried to teach her to swim before they got into the raft, but she hadn't been interested. Now, she wished she paid more attention. She stopped shouting so she could suck in big breaths of air.

Just as the deflated raft was pulled out of her hands, Sue saw a small bush in the water. With the last of her strength, she reached for the tree and pulled herself in closer to it. With both arms wrapped around the biggest limb, she nestled herself into the bush. Breathing easier, she relaxed her death grip on the bush and took stock of her situation. All of the gear they had with them was somewhere in the river. The deflated raft floated out of sight. She was on a small sand bar. The water nearly covered it, but there was a small piece of dry land.

    She extended
