Reviews for Galba's Men
4 ratings1 review
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An amusing take on the short-lived reign of Galba, the first of the post Julio-Claudians. We meet again the palace staff of the preceding volume and delve more into their stories, especially that of Philo, the secretary's secretary, the lovelorn overseer Straton, and others, with their loves, lusts, joys, sorrows, back-stabbings. Galba enters Rome on a sour note, which will not endear him to people: the decimation of sailors, massacre of inhabitants--the latter an unintended consequence of the former, and, what the military is to find out: his parsimony. The story follows his 3 henchmen and their machinations; Otho's name is proposed for heir and he finally leads a successful coup when he finds out he is not chosen to be the heir. A quick, delightful, fast-moving read.Highly recommended.
