    Theme

The theme of this book is Isaiah 26:3 - 4. This is the distinct and unifying composition of this book, The Last Single Digit.

Formal Equivalence refers to translating by finding reasonably words and phrases that have equal value, significance or meaning while following the source language as closely as possible. This style is often referred to as Literal Translation or Word-for-Word Translation (Will discuss in Chapter 1).

    Isaiah 26:3 - 4

    3. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

    4. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD

    JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

    (KJV)

    Isaiah 26:3 - 4

    3. You will keep him in perfect peace,

Whose mind is stayed on You,

    Because he trusts in You.

    4. Trust in the LORD forever,

For in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength

    (NKJV)

    Isaiah 26:3 – 4

    3. You keep him in perfect peace

whose mind is stayed on you,

    because he trusts in you.

    4. Trust in the LORD forever,

for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.

    (ESV)

    Isaiah 26:3 - 4

    3. You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.

    4. So trust in the Lord (commit yourself to Him, lean on Him, hope confidently in Him) forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages].(AMP)

Functional Equivalence is sometimes called Dynamic Equivalence or Thought -for - Thought Translation. It is a translation process in which the translator(s) attempts to reflect and focus on the thought of the writer in the source language rather than the word-for-word translation, (Will discuss in Chapter 1).

    Isaiah 26: 3 - 4

    3. You will keep in perfect peace

    those whose minds are steadfast,

    because they trust in you.

    4. Trust in the LORD forever,

for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.

    (NIV)

    Isaiah 26:3-4

    3. Lord, you will give perfect peace

to anyone who commits himself to be faithful to you.

That’s because he trusts in you.

    4. Trust in the Lord forever.

    The Lord is the Rock.

The Lord will keep us safe forever.

    (NIrV)

    Isaiah 26:3-4

    3. The LORD gives perfect peace to those whose faith is firm.

    4. So always trust the LORD

because he is forever our mighty rock.

    (CEV)

The extensive use of Dynamic Equivalence is called a paraphrase, or thought -for-thought translation. It goes even further than dynamic equivalence when translating the source. It attempts to convey some key concepts while not retaining even a dynamic equivalence with the text, (Will discuss in Chapter 1).

    Isaiah 26:3-4

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you,

all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

    3. Trust in the Lord always,

for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.

    (NLT)

    Isaiah 26:3-4

1 - 6 At that time, this song will be sung in the country of Judah:

We have a strong city, Salvation City, built and fortified with salvation.

Throw wide the gates so good and true people can enter.

People with their minds set on you, you keep completely whole,

Steady on their feet, because they keep at it and don’t quit.

Depend on God and keep at it because in the Lord God you have a sure thing.

Those who lived high and mighty he knocked off their high horse.

He used the city built on the hill as fill for the marshes.

All the exploited and outcast peoples build their lives on the reclaimed land.

    (MSG)

    * The MSG version takes a section of scriptures and paraphrase instead of verse by verse translation.
