Chapter 1
God asks no man whether he will accept life; that is not the choice. You must take it. The only choice is how.
—Henry Ward Beecher
Who am I, and what is this book about?
We live in a fantastic world full of mystery and abounding opportunities. Keeping that in mind, I wrote this book about my life and what I have learned. You may relate to some of my ideas and experiences. My hope is that you will find some bits of truth in my story and that you will be able to apply them to your own life.
Since I was a young girl, I have been earnestly seeking answers to certain questions. What is life’s purpose? Why are we here? Is this all there is?
Finally at this point in my life, I believe I have found some of the answers. The answers were always there. You must have heard the old adage When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
I was finally ready to stop and listen, not with my preconceived ideas and beliefs, but with fresh eyes and ears. What I found surprised me. No, I mean really surprised me. I had so many misconceptions.
This book is an attempt to explain what I have found to be true for me. Once I knew it, my life changed. I changed my thinking. My interior life changed, which in turn affected my exterior life. If you’re anything like I was, you have a variety of issues you worry about on a daily basis. My life had been awfully challenging. I had to endure a rather difficult childhood. I have a genetic blood disorder, which feels like a constant fifty-pound weight I have to carry. I have been widowed and divorced. I have been in abusive relationships and addictive relationships. I have had financial problems. The list goes on and on. In addition, I have three kids. So you know how that goes. Do they have enough? Did I do enough? Will they be okay?
There was always something on my mind that I was feeling stressed about. I’m sure, like you, I considered myself to be a good person. I always loved God. Being raised Catholic, I went to church on Sundays, sometimes even during the week. I confessed weekly. I tried to help others. I didn’t smoke or drink or use drugs. I didn’t steal or
