About this ebook

This delightful collection of charmingly told animal stories started out as bedtime reading for the authors grandchildren, some ideas of whom contributed to its inspiration. Here you will meet such characters as a little duck who refuses to fly south for the winter with the other ducks because he wants to be independent, Jasper the scaredy-cat who is afraid of everything until he meets little Calico, and a field mouse who constantly exaggerates and never really listens, with unexpectedly dangerous consequences for her family. Interspersed with the stories are funny poems and questions to make you think. Although the animals are frankly humanised, the authors voice is never condescending but supremely natural. Principles to enable a child to cope with lifes challenges are communicated in an imaginative and sensitive manner.

Sheena Mitchell

As an experienced parent, grandmother, and retired minister, Sheena Mitchell knows what children like. The stories she tells with rich imagination and homely touch were tried out first as bedtime reading, on the grandchildren for whose sake she took early retirement. Her narration of the stories has been enthusiastically received by both pupils and teachers in Scottish primary schools.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would like to thank those of my family and friends who have encouraged me to publish these little stories and poems, which began as bedtime stories for my grandsons James and Matthew.

Thank you, James, for helping me with the plot of ‘Jasper the Scaredy Cat’, and your suggestion for a story about a snail and a slug, that became the poem The Snail, the Slug and the Little Red Bug. Keep the ideas coming, James!

A special thank you to Alison Black, who not only proofread the manuscript but also has encouraged me greatly, and taught me many things in the process. Thank you, Alison, for the many hours you have spent with me on the telephone.

I want to thank Anne Thomas for her wonderful illustrations. Anne, they are delightful! . . . just as I envisioned they should be.

The lioness awoke from a fitful sleep, stretched out her long body, and lay very still, listening to sounds that only she seemed to hear. Suddenly she sat up!

Theodore, wake up, she said to her mate as she nudged him with her nose. Something is going on upstairs.

Oh, go back to sleep, Nia, sighed Theodore the lion, as he curled up his body in an attempt to get more comfortable. They’re probably just preparing our food, he said with a big yawn.

It is too early for that, Theodore, she insisted. There was a bump, and then I’m sure I heard a creaking noise like the big door being opened, and the humans all seem excited about something.

Would you two be quiet, sounded a voice out of the dark. Can’t a leopard get some sleep?

"I’m sorry, Lui. I know that you don’t like to be disturbed before you’re ready, but Nia seems to think that someone has opened the
