    Preface

Welcome to the reading of this book!

Teaching is a dedicated and honourable career and it takes constant energy and focus to do the job well. Currently, teachers are expected to improve their performance in order to produce better learning outcomes for students. This book will give you the skills to become an excellent teacher.

Who am I to write this book? My name is Gaye O’Brien, and I have spent over twenty-five years as a teacher, working in all sectors of schooling—preschool, primary, secondary, and tertiary. I worked as a secondary support teacher for several years, assisting teachers to adjust programs to suit the needs of students having challenges with accessing the curriculum.

I also spent a large amount of time as head of a secondary special education, where I developed a keen interest in disaffected learners and those who find learning a challenge. In order to teach these particular students, I had to examine closely the skills I used and break down the teaching into small steps that the students could assimilate more easily.

My role has also included an adult focus, as I worked with both parents and staff who were frustrated by these students. I have found that the skills I learned by becoming an NLP trainer have empowered me to help adults as well as children. As the staff and students benefited from NLP, I decided it was time to share my knowledge and skills with others.

What Is in This Book for You?

My aim in writing NLP Essentials for Teachers: The Art of Encouraging Excellence in Your Students is to give the reader the following benefits:

    • a fresh, innovative, and inspirational way of looking at issues that present themselves on a daily basis

    • an in-depth explanation of how to really get to know your students, understand how they learn, and assist them in becoming creative, resourceful problem-solvers

    • detailed information on how best to implement effective teaching strategies to motivate students to maximise their learning potential and become lifelong learners

    • ways to promote a supportive and safe learning environment through the incorporation of effective language practices when developing rapport, teaching subject content, managing challenging behaviour, and resolving classroom conflicts

    • knowledge and skills for engaging professionally with school students or adult learners (as the case may be), as well as parents, caregivers, colleagues, and the broader community

    • an opportunity to reflect on personal teaching practices and engage in professional learning

Every day, teachers have to find ways to engage students in learning in a way that is both fun and educational. This book encourages you to examine your values and beliefs and whether or not they assist you with what you are trying to accomplish with students. Are you helping your students develop a passion for learning, as well as for acquiring trust, honesty, resilience, empathy, and respect for others?
