    Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I would like to thank my heavenly Father, Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ who saved my life, renewed my mind, and gave me peace and the courage to live the life that I was meant to live.

I am grateful to my kinsman redeemer, friend, and husband, Raymond, who faithfully read all the drafts, listened to me, prayed with and for me, and encouraged me throughout the entire process. You were my anchor in the storm and my rock. Thank you for helping me to envision the possibilities for this book and for believing in me. I could not have written this book without you.

To Ethan and Olivia, my inspiration. Thank you for being so quiet when Mommy was writing and for being so patient to get some of my time and attention.

To Mamina, I could not have told our story without you. Your support, encouragement, and courage to share your journey will bless many generations to come. Thank you for always believing in me.

To Karin and Carlo for cheering me on when my strength and energy waned. Your support in helping realize my dream is a gift that I will never forget.

To the Altine family, thank you for your support of this project and for sharing Granny with everyone. This is not just my story; it’s our story.

To Jean Malan for sharing the message of Christ with me and for being a constant presence in my life.

To Reverend and Mrs. Soliny Vedrine of L’Eglise Missionnaire Baptiste de Boston and Pastor and Mrs. Tony Kebreau of L’Eglise Nouvelle Jerusalem. You planted the seeds of the foundational biblical truths of God’s Word and taught me all the traditional hymns in Haitian Creole. Your intercessory prayers throughout my formative years kept so much danger away from me. Merci, que Dieu vous benisse! To the saints at Jubilee Christian Church who lifted us in prayer throughout our daughter’s hospitalization and demonstrated that love wasn’t just something you say, it’s something you do. To the Dominion Christian Church family and Senior Pastor Alexander D. Hurt and First Lady Ty Hurt who laid a sound biblical training ground, under which we have been trained and equipped for ministry, not just for the New England area, but for the world.

To all of my friends and donors who supported this book and made it possible for me to share it with the world. Your enthusiasm and belief in my work affirmed me in crucial moments along the way when my zeal would have otherwise flagged. I could not have done it without you. May you be encouraged and strengthened by this book. I am in deep gratitude to you for helping to make this book become a reality.

I am grateful to the editorial staff at WestBow Press. Thank you for walking me through the process and supporting me every step of the way. I am also grateful to Jacqueline Holmes Haley, Professor Victoria Bacon, Senior Pastor Alexander D. Hurt and First Lady Ty Hurt, Professor Robert Pazmino, Carl Narcisse and Karin Senior, and the Altine family for their editorial review of the overall content and biblical as well as theoretical analysis of this memoir. Your editorial review and suggestions gave me a fresh perspective. Many thanks to Earl Stafford, who was one of the first to review Faith’s Legacy in the very beginning. Thank you for seeing the potential in this book in its infancy stage and encouraging me to pursue this endeavor.

Finally, this memoir is dedicated to my sweet girl, Olivia, who is the inspiration for this book. Continue Faith’s Legacy. I love you with all of my heart.

Then the Lord replied: ‘Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it’ (Habakkuk 2:2).

    Foreword

For years, I watched my wife struggle to put her thoughts on paper. She wrestled with what to say and, at times, how her words might affect those who read it.

This is truly a remarkable book about a woman’s walk with God and how she continually had to place her trust, hope, and faith in His hands. As I write this foreword, I have to ask myself how in the world she made it without losing her mind. This is not a book solely addressed to women, but it is a book thanking God for all that he has done for one woman. As you read this book, you will be amazed by the level of faith it takes to endure hardship and struggle while never letting go or losing sight of God’s love. In the Old Testament, for example, Job cursed the day of his birth, hoping and praying that he would die, but he never cursed God:

After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. He said: May the day of my birth perish, and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’ That day—may it turn to darkness; may God above not care about it; may no light shine on it. May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm it. (Job 3:1-5)

My wife never gave up, although she wanted to at times. Instead she relied on and held fast to the One upon whom the women in her family before her had relied—God. Her grandmother would always say, Watch and pray, pray and watch, because she knew that God would always keep his promises to his children.

This book is a true testimony to the women that have walked tirelessly before God, expecting to receive his best while giving of themselves to serve him. From Marie to Olivia, the relationship that God has with these women is remarkable, and one that I have never witnessed before. I am simply a spectator looking in the window, praying to grasp an inch of their anointing.

Many blessings to my best friend and wife, Fabiola Powell

    Prologue

Life transformation is often born out of the experiences that stretch us beyond our comfort zone, and it is in the most painful experiences that we are often challenged to reexamine our belief systems, our attitudes, and our world. When Moses and the Israelites reached the Red Sea and found that they had no way to escape from the Egyptians, God stepped in. He not only separated them from their enemies with the pillar of fire, he also parted the Red Sea just for them. In a similar way, God shows up and is at his best in the midst of a trial when we’ve reached the end of our patience. When we’ve exhausted all knowledge, skill, ability, and resources, we are at the place where we surrender our situations to him. Our petitions, tears, and cries for help emerge from a deeper place that stirs God’s omnipotent hand to supernaturally
