My message for the reader:
My dear Friends,
Soon we will be entering the most wonderful season of Advent. For the Christian Church, this is the beginning of the new year.
First, I would ask that you make a point to enter into the spirit of Advent. The word advent is Latin for a coming or arrival. The idea behind it is that God came to earthly
life and lived among us. It is something to celebrate and rejoice. Advent is also a season of preparation. In Advent, we thank God for Christs first coming, prepare for his final coming at the end of time, and celebrate Christs presence among us today through the Spirit.
Second, I would encourage you to find the time to be in church. Many people feel that Christmas has been hijacked by popular culture. For me, I love all of the secular songs and traditions. However, without the foundation of knowing and believing that Christ is at the center of Advent, the rest becomes unsatisfying.
Third, this little book is a Christmas devotional divided into twenty-eight short chapters. I would encourage you not to read ahead. Take a minute each day to follow the adventures of ... Wait a minute, I better stop or I will spoil the story for you. (I hope youre not one of those people who jump to the end to read the last chapter first.)
Fourth, I hope that in some way this story will help you on your journey to greet the newborn king.
Fifth, have a joy-filled and safe Advent and Christmas.
Pax,
Ron

The Journey to Bethlehem - Ronald B. Cox
1 - A TRUTH STORY
Let me introduce myself. My name is Reuel and I’m not a writer. You might ask, Then what are you doing writing this story?
That’s a really good question. All I can say is that this story needs to be told and I’m going to tell it as best as I can remember.
If you’re an astute reader, you might ask, "Did you make a mistake? When you said truth story, did you mean to say true story?" No! I want to be clear that this story is made-up.
In this story, it’s not what the words say, it’s what they mean. The words tell the story—the story tells the truth. It is important not only to see the story, but to listen to what is being said deep inside.
We live in a world of stories: books, magazines, newspapers, television, radio, and the Internet. And as so often happens when we read, or hear, or see a story, we are entertained. We are drawn into the story. We are happy when the characters are happy, and sad when they are sad. We are transported into the situation by the actions and words of the characters and the familiar and not-so-familiar locations.
I love stories and I would think you do as well. And not every story I’ve read is true. But of all the stories I have read, the really important ones cause me to think and wonder and dig beyond the words to find truth.
Now to be perfectly honest, this is not the best story that has ever been told. But I promise you this—the truth lies within the words.
Well, enough of that; it’s time to get on with it. I’m not going to say, Once upon a time,
or A long time ago,
or There was once,
or even In the Beginning.
Let me just say,
It’s so sad.
2 - IT’S SO SAD
Talitha, Keturah, Kezia, Jael, and Rohgah were not only born on the same day, but their families lived next to each other at the end of a road out by the edge of the village. Because of this strange and wonderful circumstance, the families grew closer and closer, day by day, week by week, month by month, and year by year. They would help each other when help was needed and share when sharing made sense. Little by little, they became more than friends—they became a family.
You might ask, Then why would you choose the title of the chapter to be ‘It’s so sad?’
Well . . . as the moms and dads grew closer and closer, over the years Talitha, Keturah, Kezia, Jael, and Rohgah moved in the opposite direction—they grew further and further apart.
They had been the best of friends. They had shared in sleepovers, birthdays, music lessons, synagogue, and so much more. They were inseparable—the fantastic five, five peas-in-a-pod, five fingers-on-a-hand, five toes-on-a-foot, five . . . well, you know what I mean.
But, as they grew, they changed—they grew away from each other. Their interests changed, their tastes changed, their friends changed, and it seemed
