About this ebook

Intercourse with ones spouse is part of being human. Alli has taken such a subject which has cultural taboos all around it, and brought it to the reader with religious light. Something that is rare in the English language. A must read.
Tahir Anwar, Imam, U.S.A.

"Sex is a normal function of life...so normal that every single human being owes its existence to it. However because of the insanity that has gripped the world in terms of porn this book acts as sane voice. Sex is sacred and we need to take back the sheets from the porn industry. Many young people are drawn to porn and what is learnt from its pages/screens is all wrong. Women are to be respected. And in the arena of love/sex between married people only true knowledge can bring joy. This book carrying such knowledge should be required reading by all young people as it discusses the topic of intimacy in a halal manner". Foreword by Carlyle Jansen

It is with great pleasure and honour that I present you with this important book Intimacy and the Sacred. It is also a privilege to introduce you to Mr Habeeb Alli, a wise teacher and thoughtful leader. I was introduced to Mr Alli a year ago en route to forming a panel of spiritual leaders willing to discuss the broad and challenging topic of sexuality together. I was instantly drawn into his openness and interest in bringing people of different faiths together and a commitment to the people and truth of his own faith. It has been a pleasure to get to know Habeeb over the year through emails, workshops and eventually the panel discussion. Yet I really gained an appreciation his integrity and wisdom through the reading of this book. And as a non-Muslim, it has offered me a great insight and increased appreciation of the essence and strength of Islam. While I may not identify with some of the advice contained in the following pages, what impressed me was the lens with which he views the original religious texts and the application of those teachings to the faithful in the Western world of the 21st century. His wisdom shines in how he clarifies the intentions of laws in order to apply them to the realities of Muslims in the world today. He illustrates the essence of what the prophet Mohammed, on whom be peace, and others taught as honourable and right in the eyes of Allah.

In particular, I love Mr. Alli’s overall perspective of sex and sexuality as beautiful, a blessing, and something to be celebrated rather than shamed. This book gives us the guiding principles to help us celebrate our bodies the divine union between lovers that can make partnerships stronger and enhance a marriage. We learn that our bodies are halal and that our love and pleasure are blessings from God. With reverence we can enjoy pleasure that celebrates Allah’s gifts to us.

As a feminist, I also appreciated Habeeb’s consistent and earnest reverence of women. People of all faiths can learn from his sincerity in valuing women as equals and respect for their desires and satisfaction. He takes into account the differences in women’s sexual needs and the reiterates the importance of their satisfaction in a partnership. Celebration and pleasure is for everyone!

Please enjoy the insight in the ensuing pages and celebrate the pleasures that Allah gave to us with the guidance of what is good for you and pleasing to God. You will not only enjoy the reading of this book, but will also relax into the delights that ensue knowing that your enjoyment is halal. May you enjoy all of Allah’s blessings!

Why this Book?

This book is the next step in a project that I started five years ago.

At that time, I started answering questions on allexpert.com on various Islamic topics. (I am a qualified Islamic scholar.) One of the great insights learned from this experience is that there is a paucity of open dialog on matters on sex and physical intimacy in a religion context.

Talking about sex is taboo and for an Imam to comment on it is seen way beyond the norm, according to Moulana Yusuf Badat. However, the Qur’an talks about it - and in Ramadan! Allah reminds us to approach our spouse between Iftar and dawn, unlike the practice of pre Islam where a fasting person is considered at violation for having sex during the night.

I have conducted workshops and written on this topic many times.

I decided to tackle this subject head-on by writing this book on how sex and intimacy is a fundamental part of the Muslim experience. Further, that they are grounded in the teachings of the Hadiths and the Quran. In it, I covered such topics as masturbation, fantasy and role playing, sex toys, pornography and polygamy.

As fortune would have it, Vision TV was filming a new documentary series on "Sex + Religion", and I was invited to be on an episode (2010-November) with a priest, a rabbi and a sex educator to talk about
