Dream in Dream
Once upon a time, in a distant kingdom, in a bigseaport town there was a poor window who lived with her son. Her husband, a seafarer and ship’s captain, had died in the ocean squalls and form then on the poor woman’s hardships began. Her sorrow at the lost happy days was growing increasingly, her savings were dwindling and she had to earn her own living. The only thing she possessed was a house with a big orchard full of trees laden with a variety of fruits.
The poor woman started to pick the fruits from the garned and carry them to the big market. Every day she took a cartful of juicy peaches, aromatic apricots, large apples, amber-coloured grapes, sugary melons, as well as fragrant spices.
Her life was hard but she didn’t complain. Her comfort and helper was her son. Roberto had been helping her ever since her was a child; he gathered the fruits; arranged them, and after he grew up a little he carried the baskets to the market.
The boy was gifted; he was very musical. He could easily memorize and sing difficult melodies. That is why a friend’s father started teaching him to play the violin from a very early age. At the age of twelve Roberto could perform difficult pieces but with a verve. He loved music very much and step by step he got into its boundless secrets.
He was a handsome boy with a slender body, fine profile, big velvety eyes, a high brow and unruly dark hair. His mother was very proud of him and all the people showered him with praise. The spoiled him and made him haughty. Roberto loved his mother and had good manners but looked down on people. He didn’t mix much with the other children and mocked ugly and clumsy people.
Roberto played at the market. Attracted by the sound of his violin, the people would stop and shop from his mother. In this way he practiced because he knew that talent alone is not enough to become a good musician, it also took a lot of work!
Everyone enjoyed the beauty of his gifted hands. Sometimes his violin sounded deeply and sometimes his fingers swiftly flew along the strings. How easily and vigorously he performed virtuosic passages, arpeggios, chromatic, chromatic scales, how easily he changed positions at this early age! He was forecast a bright future on the great scenes. His mother was glad and hoped that this would really come true.
Alas, what she wished for and what everyone expected did not happen.
One early afternoon, as usual, the widow was sitting at the market and her son was playing to practice. There were no people about, they would come later and that is why Roberto was working on a difficult piece, which required particular diligence.
And there it happened! A very old woman appeared in the distance. Attracted by the sound, she slowly headed for Roberto and his mother’s handcart.
Ah, what an ugly and frightful woman she was! As if bent by the weight of the years, she walked with difficulty, dragging one of her feet. As she approached, the clearer her misshapen features could be seen. Her face had a parchment-like skin, her nose was long and crooked, her eyes squinting with lips thin and curved and she almost lacked a neck. Everything about her was incredibly ugly. The widow shuddered. She had been going into the market every day form early dawn for ten years and had never seen such a malformed creature and she stopped right in front of them!
Roberto almost dropped his violin at the sight of the old woman that looked as if she’d come out of horror fairytale. She turned to him and shouted, What a musician! He would stop but right in the middle of the phrase! You’ll make no good—ha, ha, ha! Bad times have set in—there are no more musicians, no real artists. Bad times!
Irritated by these words and in order to conceal his anger Roberto shouted out, Who are you to talk to me about art! I was taught art is something beautiful, and you are just the opposite—such an ugly face, such a long nose—you are ugliness itself! Ha, ha, ha!
The old woman laughed, glaring at him with a strange look and said through her clenched teeth, It’s not good to talk to me like that, you little mocker! So, you don’t like my nose? Well, maybe in time you’ll have one too, perhaps even longer than mine!
Ugly mouth, crooked mouth, you only speak nonsense
, replied the boy.
"Now it’s my mouth! It’s not good to mock old people
