The Cover – The cover art was created by David Brownstead, an artist with decades of experience, located in San Diego, California. David attended the prestigious Art School of Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, graduating in 1978, Summa Cum Laude, designated Most Outstanding Undergraduate. At the time of his graduation, the Smithsonian Institute listed the art school as one of the twenty best in the United States.

My influences – It is hard to list all of the people in my life who influenced these poems.

Certainly, my paternal grandparents who taught me from my earliest days about being a man – honesty, character, strength, judgment and sensitivity. Who taught me that life was about choices, consequences and judging what hills were worth dying for. My maternal grandparents who taught me about unconditional love. My parents, who showed love, understanding and support for my love of reading, writing, sports and learning.

My family – Patty, my children and grandchildren (and spouses), Amber, Brian, Russell, Michael, Rob, Kristy, Andrea, Ryan, Jake – who instilled in me the wonder of family, of being a father, father-in-law and husband, of a life of unconditional love. My siblings - Bert, Ronald, Hollie and Paul, some of whom I helped raise, all of whom helped shape my formative years.

Mary Lou and Bart, loving in-laws who supported me in anything I tried.

Nancy, who made me realize that, after 30 years of throwing away my poetry, that it was worth sharing with others.

The many young men and women I coached or mentored and watched over, who made me understand the hopes, dreams and vulnerability of the young.

Cancer, war and transplants, which all taught me the need for strength, humor, judgment, sacrifice, giving of yourself to support those who loved you, and the power of triumph over the most terrible odds.

In alphabetical order: Amber, Babe, Evelyn, Hollie, Judy, Kathy, Kristi, Liz, Maria, Nancy, Patty, Susie, Terri, and so many other women who helped me understand the truth of a woman’s heart.

And last, but most important – God. The One who created His user’s manual on how to be a man, a man of God, a husband, a father, and a caring friend – the Bible.

All of these live in all the words of these poems.
