Author

Gloria D. Jones

Gloria Page Jones’s expertise in this area is driven by her experience with God and her walk with him. She has written articles and technical papers for years regarding mental health and substance abuse issues. It is from this experience that she integrated her training of applying theories and techniques to daily life skills in treatment settings to integrating the principles and percepts of God into her daily walk. She and her husband of thirty years reside outside of Thomasville, Georgia on a small plot of land where they raised six children and three grandchildren. She has been fortunate to work with individuals and families in the area who have mental health and substance abuse problems.

    (Proverbs 21:16)

I have written this book from the seat of imperfection and have dedicated it to those who share this seat with me. For those of you who have reached perfection and have learned it all that you need to know-put it down-this book will prove to be extremely boring for you.

My family knows that they have been the motivation for all that I have accomplished; I thank them for their love and support.

This book is dedicated to those like me who need just a little more instruction than what is given in traditional religious settings. If you have been sitting on the pews for years following traditions and maintaining appropriate behaviors (you know when to stand sit and sing in the service) this book is for you-let’s move to the next level. We can live in God’s Authority-for it is our God given right. Now we must learn how to exercise it.

YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW

     (Proverbs 3:1-7)

I have spent the majority of my life working with two types of people-those who know what they know and those who don’t know what they don’t know. In the settings that I have been exposed, most of the people I have worked with, really don’t know what they don’t know. These are not untrained or unintelligent people, but are people who simply lack understanding of the continuum of knowledge and believe that their perceptions and experiences are the extent of or end of that knowledge.

I have been fortunate in my work to be required to understand that my perspective of a matter is most often irrelevant when working with people who are trying to make changes in their lives. Because they often believe that the choices they are making are good choices, based on what I perceive to be, their life experience to that point. My first understanding of this occurred when my son was about 4 or 5 years old. I was a single mom, living in Phoenix Arizona. I was playing softball on a team and during the game; my son fell off the bleachers. As you may know, a mother knows the cry of her child, I ran off the field (center field), and ran to the hospital with him in my arms. (Don’t be impressed, the field sat behind the hospital on the base). He was screaming at the top of his voice, I too had joined him because as we were running through the field, frogs were jumping up around me. By the time we arrived at the reception desk; we were both screaming and crying.

Once the nurse realized I was not hurt, she attended to my son, only to discover that the injury was minor, he was just scared. I looked at him and told him Hush, it’s not that bad. He looked up at me with those beautiful brown eyes and said But it is to me! That was the last time that I looked at a situation only from my perspective.

As I worked with various families who were dealing with a multitude of problems and my church families over the years, I have come to realize that the enemy has maintained his deceptive campaign very well.

The current teachings of many of the churches are superficial and often not grounded in biblical principles. Many churches function from a place of tradition and rituals. Jesus himself warns us of these traditions when he scolds the scribes and Pharisees
