About this ebook

This book is all about understanding humanity in order to improve quality of life. It focuses on family life and the social structure, which needs reforming and reviving in the cool light of humanity. The basis for this book is my article, I wrote about weak relationship between parents and children, and poor upbringing leads to violence, which was published in the Ottawa Citizen in 2004.

This book is for everyone, especially for the teenagers of our world. If parents cannot become the role models for their children, they should welcome grandparents; they should let them stay close to the children and be the role models for them And let grandparents become the torchbearers of humanity our torches started becoming dim when we started losing their guidance.

We need to change our self-serving mindset Reviving the role of grandparents is a need in our time Understanding humanity should begin at home; this mindset can understand the significance of taking care of neighbours. As grandparents teach human values, they connect their families with the past, which gives them a better understanding of proper human behaviour. Grandparents teach dos and donts through examples, and they become examples; it is like a game of show-and-tell.

Although this is not a lengthy book, this text is enough to learn how to respect others and to live with dignity, and to awaken humanity in human relations. Moral and ethical values that build a strong character are presented in the book, and, though these teachings are not new, they have been reminded to mankind throughout history.

Afra Ghazi

About the Author [on the last pages of the book] Noorjahan Ghazi is a versatile writer. This is her second book. Her primary interests are society, culture, social change, and, of course, humanity, which is an essential message of all scriptures. She has been presenting papers on Hyderabad and South Asian cultural issues as well as papers on women’s status at seminars. Her main subjects are sociology and Islamic studies; she achieved her masters degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. She is a permanent resident of Ottawa, Canada. Noorjahan has been writing articles for more than forty years, and her articles have been published by newspapers and journals from several places in India: Hyderabad, Kashmir, Calcutta, Delhi, and Jeddah; her work has also been published in London and Canada. She was born in India. At the age of eleven, she received an award from the national company known as A.V.M company]for an essay she wrote; the topic was “unity is strength.” She also contributed articles to her college magazine. In this book Noorjahan Ghazi addresses different aspects of humanity. She has tried to enable readers to notice the ignored figures of our society—grandparents and grandchildren. Her goal is to motivate readers to appreciate human ethical values, since she believes that ‘the fast- changing values are the pollution of our fast- paced lives’. She discusses the social behavior of the present generations, and about the ‘weak relationship between parents and children’, and she believes that ‘poor upbringing leads to violence’. It will stimulate the reader, as societies in our world are facing this issue. Noor jahan Ghazi president of the ‘international women’s writers forum’, organized an international women’s seminar in Jeddah in 2001, papers were presented by distinguished writers on four cultures of the world, and attended by intellectual ladies from several countries. Noorjahan Ghazi has reviewed a few books too. One book was written by an ambassador, another was by the director of ‘Organization of Islamic Countries’, and one was published in Canada. She believes that books should be used to educate society and to promote an understanding of one another as human beings.

Dedicated to those who live for others and believe in humanity, and to those grandchildren and grandparents who love to live together and are sincere with each other in caring and sharing – and, of course, to my beloved granddaughters: Afra, Afaf, Afiyah, and Afifah, who love to live with us.

    Preface

This book is based on my experiences and observations. My message focuses on the present condition of grandparents and grandchildren, who are both being sacrificed for the modern comforts of life and who are searching for a better life in the darkness of lack of humanity. This book is about three generations who have journeyed far away from each other: grandparents, parents,
