    Introduction

    dolphin.jpg

Hi, my name is Bubbles. I am a bottlenose dolphin and I want to share my secret place with you. It’s in the Pacific Ocean and it’s a small island where only dolphins and sea creatures live. It is called Delphi Island. As it is so small, most people fail to recognise it as an island, so they just pass it by, thinking it is the reflection of clouds in the sea. In actual fact, it is an amazing island!

It is an incredible island to explore, as there are caves, shallow areas to play in and plenty of fish! The formation of the island itself is spectacular and the rock formations around the island are remarkably sculptured like bridges and pillars. Although we love the open sea, this is one of our little sanctuaries away from the rest of the world to swim, nest and, most of all, have fun and play. Things that only can be described as magical happen on this island. All our friends like the otters, seals, sea lions, turtles and penguins, to name a few, stop by for a visit and then they continue on their way contentedly. The whales also stop by sometimes for a chat and so do the sharks. I remember my grandad telling me tales of mermaids and mermen discovering the island and making it their home, but unfortunately, for some reason they seem to have disappeared. The magic of the place is starting to slip away and that is one reason I am sharing my secret place with you: to tell you about its magic as well as our quest to save it. But before I describe to you our challenges, let me tell you how the dolphins came to the wonderful island.

Now, what is the phrase that you commonly use? Oh, yes, I remember…

Once upon a time there lived a mermaid, called Bella, who was curious about life and loved to explore, swim and play with all the sea creatures. She was loved by all—her family, friends, merpeople and sea creatures alike—for her generosity, kindness, compassion and love. Her closest friend was Angelstar, a curious dolphin who was always by Bella’s side.

One day when Bella and Angelstar were exploring some caves, a huge shadow from above the water fell over them. Being the inquisitive pair they were, Bella and Angelstar swam almost to the surface to see what it was. They realised it was a huge sailing ship and as they hadn’t seen one in a very long time, they decided to follow it at a distance to see where it was going. After swimming behind the ship for a while, Angelstar suddenly realised that they were farther than they had previously been and mentioned that to Bella. However, Bella wanted to keep going, as she was interested to see where the ship was going. Angelstar would never leave Bella to swim on her own, so they kept following the ship for a very long time.

Finally, the ship started to slow down, although Angelstar and Bella were uncertain as to the reason why, as there was no land visible for miles anywhere, just clouds and their reflections. The ship seemed to steer towards the reflection of the clouds. After they swam a little closer, Bella and Angelstar both realised that it was a little island, not the reflection of clouds! As both Angelstar and Bella had not seen this little island before, they were very curious and excited about it and decided to stay unseen by the ship until nightfall.

When nightfall came, Bella and Angelstar approached the island cautiously, as they noticed that the ship had anchored at sea and some men had made their way on smaller boats to the island. Angelstar and Bella made their way to the island, making sure the men did not see them.

When they reached the island, both Angelstar and Bella were dismayed at the mess the men were making. They were discarding
