MARLAINE PAULSEN COVER is the founder of the Parenting 2.0 (P20) international consciousness movement. “Replace Occupy with Exemplify and you have the formula for P20.” Cover’s path to social activism began after she yelled at her eldest daughter one morning when she left for school without eating breakfast. Feeling “outmanned” in her efforts to teach her children that non-academic Life Skills were as critical as academics, and knowing true change would only come about when she herself “truly changed,” Cover sat down and created The Life Skills Report Card (LSRC.) In 2009, Cover started the Parenting 2.0 group on LinkedIn to share the concept of the LSRC and support Life Skills Educators. P20’s mission is for children’s “Life Skills Averages to one day be as appreciated as their Grade Point Averages.” Today, P20 is LinkedIn’s top-ranked parenting group, with more than two thousand members in over fifty countries, and plans for launching an international volunteer organization called The Global Presence. With her daughters now attending University of California colleges, Cover resides in southern California with her husband of twenty-seven years, William Hurt Cover, PhD, J.D.

Foreward
I can’t even remember exactly how we met - I just know it was one of those beautiful synchronistic happenings that make life a magical playground. From our very first introduction, I knew Marlaine was a unique.
A unique
is someone who stands out in the crowd, regardless of what they’re wearing, what color their hair is, or whether they are talking loud or whispering. A unique
is someone whose passion is so clear, whose mission is so unshakeable, that you find yourself irresistibly drawn to them like an iron shaving to a magnet.
It was in the middle of our first or second phone conversation, when she mentioned she was editing Kissing the Mirror, that I blurted out, I’ll write your foreword if you want!
That’s how pulled I felt into the magnetism that surrounds Marlaine – a magnetism I have since learned is nothing less than an international consciousness movement called Parenting 2.0. Founded by Marlaine in 2009, and inspired by her rejuvenating, home-spun, perspectives on how all of us can better flourish on this chaotic planet we call home, Parenting 2.0 is blazing new educational trails in countries around the globe.
Marlaine begins Kissing the Mirror by describing The Mandatory Curriculum
facing every human being. She then affirms your personal ability to excel thanks to your human GPS.
Her introduction of The Life Skills Report Card, a communication tool she created out of desperation while raising her own two daughters, blends wisdom and whimsy while providing a dramatic paradigm shift for human development. The Life Skills Report Card is a system. System is an acronym for:
S-Save
Y-Your
S-Self
T-Time
E-Energy &
M-Money
As Marlaine writes Free will does not mean you choose the curriculum. It merely permits you to choose the amount of suffering you and others endure until you learn a better way of doing things.
My own life took an empowering turn when I first read her Life Skills Report Card. My initial thought was, Damn, I wish I’d had that download previously! Powerful!
I then contemplated how such a simple concept could begin to positively change the world.
An excerpt from "Kissing The Mirror":
A poem titled ‘Children learn what they live’ is internationally famous. Its popularity among educators and the families they serve is tragic. Why do people around the world readily support children spending decades learning math, sports, and music from third party credentialed instructors, but accept children’s education in Life Skills as being limited to parents’ behavior? What price do we pay for this impoverished narrative for human development?
The Life Skills Report Card, however, is just one of many ideas Marlaine shares in Kissing the Mirror that will have you examining age-old assumptions in a new light and tackling tough child-rearing challenges with renewed confidence and vigor. In fact, if the book only contained Chapter 7 on Failure (which itself provides enough sanity wrapped in a big red bow to transform the whole of society) reading it would be one of the best investments of your life.
I’ve always said that the proof of a great writer is that in simply reading their words, an instant transformation within one’s own psyche occurs. Prepare to be transported into a world where inner wisdom reigns supreme: A world where love, compassion, humor, humility, and enthusiasm for learning are an all-time reality. Prepare yourself for Parenting 2.0.

The Passion Test – The Effortless Path
to Discovering Your Life Purpose
Introduction
One Saturday morning, my husband and I returned home from shopping to find the first floor of our home covered with two inches of water. Although the process of mopping it up seemed simple, it actually took weeks for a team of professionals to dry out spaces between walls and replace carpets. All of this would have been wasted effort, however, had we not taken time to also identify and repair the source of the flood – a broken washing machine hose.
In every problem there is one critical point where the least amount of effort can yield the maximum results. For the flood in our home, that critical point was the washing machine hose. The water, while admittedly attention grabbing, was neither the source of the problem nor the solution.
The good news is that after the hose was repaired, and restorations were complete, our home was in better shape than before the flood. And so it is with our lives. Once we identify the real source of our difficulties, and focus our energies on repairing the hose instead of complaining or blaming others for the flood, things improve dramatically – seemingly miraculously. By contrast, if we never fix the hose and continue washing loads of clothing and mopping up floors, we qualify for the definition of insane.
Think for a moment about the last thing that troubled you. Did the same thing ever bother you previously, perhaps multiple times? If the answer is yes, rest assured it is because you were focusing on the water not the hose. Kissing the Mirror provides a new paradigm for examining the origin of your difficulties and achieving
