Introduction
What an odd word ‘downsize’. It first appeared in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 1975. It’s a verb meaning, for our purposes, to reduce in size, especially to design or produce in smaller size.¹ It’s also a lifestyle choice: What’s more important, our belongings or the people in our lives?
I have downsized and moved a number of times, most recently into a condo from a house. The process has been both surprising and difficult. Surprising to learn how much stuff I really had, and how difficult it is to let go of what needs to go so my new home is comfortable and not a storage facility.
We will discuss downsizing from the perspective of reducing the size of our living quarters and the number of objects we own. By reducing our material belongings we create more room in life to grow without being encumbered by them.
I believe that if we haven’t grown in our lives, we haven’t really lived. Personal growth sometimes takes unhappy turns, but it is growth nevertheless and we can embrace it to create a happier future. Sometimes in order to grow, we need to divest ourselves of material goods.
I Downsizing
You cannot solve a problem until you acknowledge that you have one and accept responsibility for solving it.
~ Zig Ziglar (Author, Motivational Speaker)
This doesn’t have to be a negative, nor is it a step backward, but a step toward the future. The term ‘right-sizing’ could easily be used instead. A home that was right 20 years ago when five or six people lived in it may be too large now with only one or two still there. Life has changed and the time has arrived to make some decisions. Once you get going, you may wonder why it took so long.
At first, you may feel some sadness letting go of household items you took years to accumulate. But that’s quite normal. Allow yourself time to feel this and talk about it with a trusted friend.
On the other hand, this may be the beginning of a new life that has been in the back of your mind for some time, a happier more carefree life you can’t wait to start.
Living in a smaller place doesn’t mean living without style. There are plenty of ways to live large in a small space. It’s all about attitude, creativity, storage and decorating.
In today’s world, with the so-called economic crisis bearing down, downsizing can take quite a different trajectory.
Foreclosures of homes bought with funds the purchaser did not have, or was unable to obtain, has added a different dimension to our downsizing story. The dream for the biggest McMansion on the street needs to be revised, or maybe just postponed.
Ask yourself what you’re sacrificing in order to have this big house. Is it sleep? Is your health suffering? Is it time with your family? Or is it your financial ability to pay for your children’s education?
It’s quite alright to change a dream, change direction, to decide that what you now have isn’t sustainable and let it all go in order to achieve peace in your life, knowing you can deal with the
