Patricia E. Guillen (Trisha) developed a passion for poetry while growing up in Fairfax, Virginia. She graduated from Oakton’s Flint Hill High School and later attended Lehigh University. Trisha graduated from The College of Business and Economics with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing and a minor in Communications. Her interests include tennis, swimming, and singing in productions. She is an active member of The Delta Gamma Sorority and The Washington National Debutante Ball. Trisha currently resides in New York, New York, where she is pursuing a career in Marketing and Corporate Event Planning.

The starter signaled the start of the race and I dove into the pool with five other competitors close beside me; I was seated in ninth place overall. I could almost catch the familiar scent of sweet desserts arriving for the celebration after the race, sliding a feeling of encouragement and chance into the water’s waves; I had the strength to push ahead. The crowd cheered and yelled my name, but the water muffled the sound, as the cold cement walls smacked the tone dull. Swimming, for me, had no limits; nobody could tell me what I could or could not achieve. The water raced past my face, as my arms and legs pulled toward the end of my first lap and I thought to myself, I decide where my place is in this pool.
In the moments when the universe crashes to empty waves, something driven and beautiful grows from the ripple. The people who are able to transform the world are the ones who take the time to see the details clearly, swim onward despite setbacks, and realize that small movements and ideas can amount to something huge. These people can transform the dull and ordinary into the changing world.
As I hit the second lap, time was on my side and the water’s resistance diminished, as I moved forward and remembered what I always stored in the back of my mind: Never act a copy, never line behind another, never let expected be actual.
