    Acknowledgments:

First off, I would like to thank the Lord God for giving me this blessing and the opportunity to share it with the world. I thank my mother, Rozelia, for being my support through all that I have done; Mother, you are truly my hero. I want to thank my brother Demetrius and sister Kovedia for also being my umbrella whenever I went through a storm in my life. I love you both. I will never forget all the things that we have endured from our childhood up until the present. Rev. Churchwell, I can’t forget about you; you have motivated me more than enough to be the man I am today, and with all the tough love you have given me, you have shown me the correct way to be a man and take full responsibility for my actions. I will always be grateful and honored to be called your son.

To my friend and sister Stephanie, what can I say that I haven’t said to you before or that you don’t already know? Thank you for everything and for getting me focused. My desire to write came from above and was influenced a little, supported a lot, and believed in by my best friend, Tiara. I thank you for all of your support. Through good times and bad, I deeply thank you. You are the foundation to my happiness and my life for success. I love you and can’t thank you enough for all that you have done.

To all my friends, new and old, I apologize dearly if I didn’t mention you by name, but just know I do thank you. Hey, Jared M. Little, I couldn’t do the sweater and blazer, man; maybe next time, though. Thank you.

    God bless all of you.

    Chapter 1

    Long Day at Work

After a long day working at the local prison in Southern California, Marcus clocked out for the late evening knowing that he would just come back tomorrow and clock in again. He didn’t mind, though; while he was on shift he just wanted to go home. Now that his shift was over, his request had been granted.

He got into his Lincoln LS and drove casually out of the parking lot. He drove fast but with caution on the dangerous California highways while heading home. Before he made his last turn on his route, he realized that in his rush, he had forgotten to turn in his pistol belt. The belt was still equipped with its accessories: handcuffs, mace, two fifteen-round magazines, and his Glock .45. Because this was the first time that he had accidentally taken his gear home, he began to panic. He pulled over on the side of Perry Street, his vehicle’s engine still running. He sat there in silence thinking of what to do. Then he remembered Coty Myers and his nerves began to relax and he calmed down. Coty worked the shift prior and had forgotten to turn in his gear the previous week. The only repercussion he received was an ass-chewing lecture from Warden Vasquez. I can take an ass chewing, he said to himself while placing the car in gear and continuing his journey home.

Marcus lived in the urban area of Rialto in Southern California with his fiancée. They’d been engaged for two years and had known one another for four years. Brenda, who worked just as hard at the mayor’s office as Marcus did if not harder, was a beautiful redbone with freckles and an amazing body; she had long black hair that went to the tops of her shoulders. Every guy in SoCal wanted to be with her, but she had caught interest in the Ohio native. Marcus stood six feet one; he had an athletic build with muscles here and there and was dark as a bright night. On normal days when he came home from work, he could see Brenda’s Lexus in the driveway. But today he saw nothing. Not paying any attention to the difference, he pulled up into his original parking spot in the driveway, leaving just enough room for Brenda, as if she were parked there already. Walking to the front door of his small two-bedroom home, he noticed his lights were off. Not some of them, like normal, but all of them, as if there were a blackout that had occurred during the day. The hairs on the back of his neck began to rise as he saw a flickering light glowing through the curtains and door windows.

The first thought that came to his mind was that a fire had been started and the culprit could still be there, setting the rest of his place ablaze. Remembering he still had his work gear with him,
