Some excerpts from poems:

this is my apology poem
God
im sorry for having written so many poems
and so few praising you

-----

the love-armies assembled
but i did not enlist

-----

im tired of soft poems today
i want my words to
jump up and stab a racist cop
put on gloves
sweat and bruise and bleed
help a migrant pick a thorny crop

-----

so what kind of bullets are you putting in your gun
america?

-----

if i'm hanging around
the wrong ol' town
i'm a spic
can i be american?

-----

i'm trying to put into words
the poetry that drips from your body

-----

may God bless me
with my own
nancy Reagan

-----

maybe everywhere
is in the middle of nowhere

maybe its all just physics

-----

what street
will be the last one
my casket rolls through

-----

pero la realidad es
el amor no es nicamente la belleza
los erticos fuegos en los cielos estrellados de Neruda

-----

qu saba yo
de la viscosidad del amor?

for those that taught me how to think, write and feel

especially my family, friends and professors

    above them, mom and dad

    above all, God

A special thanks to those who were directly involved in helping me put this book together: Mom, Dad, Cindy (my love), Ms. Duron, Grandma Rojas, Adam Zagajewski, Chitra Divakaruni and Tony Diaz. Also a thanks to the numerous writers and musical artists who have enriched my life greatly.

These poems were written over several years, roughly 1994-2011, and most were included in my MFA Master’s Thesis at the University of Houston.

    A Short Introduction

I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, a border town nestled along the Franklin Mountains which exists between the worlds of Mexico and the United States. The name of the city itself is The Pass; a pass between two cultures and two worlds. Like this city, I feel I am in many ways a pass between worlds, existing as a bridge between a number of dualities (Mexican/American, caring/indifferent, religious/spiritual, intellectual/anti-intellectual, mind/body, body/spirit, etc.). And like the city, my reality is not one which exists independently from the two poles but one that is influenced and nourished by them both. I am not a wall separating the two existences, but more like a chain-linked fence caught between the two worlds, capturing bits and pieces on my thin, porous, metal frame. My poetry is that residue which has been captured.

    Love and Revolution

It has been said that all poems are love poems and while I don’t necessarily believe that to be true I do think that most of the poems which I have included here are love poems in one way or another. Three terms used for love in the Greek language, Agape, Eros and Phileo, can be used to express this and can act as a sort of template for the understanding of my poetic landscape.

Agape, divine love, is present in many of my poems. From praising God to searching for a deeper spiritual connection and expression, many of my poems have in mind this first type of love. These poems have at their center a spiritual presence. Eros, erotic or sexual love, is also a major inspiration in a number of my poems. Whether they be about falling in love or breaking up or simply holding a woman’s hand, at the center of these poems is a desire to emotionally and physically connect with another human being. Phileo, brotherly love, makes up the third major section of my poems. Most of these poems are expressed in what most might term political or protest poems; poems in which the harsh realities of life and injustice are brought to life while seeking understanding and change.

Something I enjoy about life is that these three types of love are constantly interacting. While we are able to enjoy the bliss of erotic love we are also called to engage in brotherly love while also reaching upwards and inwards in a quest for divine love. What
