Her life is perfect… or is it?
BALANCE
Idealized
At the age of five, Volnavia Lance sits on her knees in her bedroom holding the right side of her face trying to hold back the tears from the pain of being struck open handed by her father for mispronouncing a word in her work book. Her face burning and swelling she finds a way to sound out the word P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A., searching her father’s face for a sign of acceptance. Her father, standing over her reaching for his belt and swearing at her to pronounce the word, daring her to fuck it up again!
Order and fear was the way of life in Volnavia’s home. Her father, controlling and violent. Her mother, submissive, withdrawn. Volnavia confused and sad, but willing to appease everyone. (Happy little family)
If being perfect is what is needed to keep peace in her home, she would make it happen. Volnavia was introduced to this world by way of pain, disappointment, and hardship. But in life to be successful, you have to have perfect BALANCE.
Sobbing uncontrollably, Volnavia tries to pronounce the word, Patricia
from her kindergarten work book.
Nervously reading from her book, The big dog ran to Pa– at.
Sobbing, holding her face and wiping the tears from her eyes while stalling searching her mind for the correct pronunciation, her heart racing and pounding inside her tiny chest, Volnavia realized she was too afraid to pronounce her own name, let alone this word she’s never seen before.
Victor Oliver Lance was tall and dark. He had a mustache she loved to touch when she set sat on his lap. His voice was strong, deep, and commanding. He was funny when he called her pet names he would make up on the spot, like Vagabond
, or Volie Polie
. It was the way he said it that let her know he was in a good mood and when daddy was in a good mood everyone was happy. He would show her off when they went out as a family. When he carried her in his arms, she felt like royalty, head straight, shoulders back, that since of pride came naturally to her. No other little girl in the world had a father like she did. Whatever she wanted she got. Family and friends spoiled her with gifts, money, and praise. Grandparents would take her for overnight visits and bring her back with bags of clothes and new toys. It wasn’t until her first memory of him exploding that she recalled fearing him.
When Victor lost his job he started losing his mind. He started yelling and screaming at her mother all the time, about why the house wasn’t clean. Why she wasn’t cooking meals he wanted to eat. Why the laundry wasn’t white enough. Anything would set him off. His voice was so strong it would cut right through you like a knife. It made her feel like the house would crumble and fall right on top of her. His words were so hateful, and hurtful, they would make her mother cry.
