About this ebook
Jann Mattson
Born in White Plains, N.Y. and moved to Connecticut at age eight, Jann Mattson was about to begin a lifetime of writing poetry. She could show you the very first poem she wrote on its original paper. After many busy years of working and raising four children alone in Florida, Jann returned to school and obtained an Associate of Arts degree and then a nursing degree. Seven years later, after a career in nursing in a Florida hospital, she had to retire due to a diagnosis of Systemic Lupus, a stroke, and other disabilities. Through these difficult years she continued to write poetry. A chap book was published while in college and she had single pieces frequently printed for special occasions. A few years ago, Jann published a "fun" book which quickly sold out. Now her love of New England, especially Downeast Maine, begins words filled with respect and emotions.

I Asked God… . . . . . .
I asked God to bring me gold;
He brought me the sun.
I asked Him to bring me diamonds;
He brought me the stars.
I asked Him to bring me ivory;
He brought me the moon.
I asked Him to bring me sweet scents;
He brought me the earth.
I asked Him to bring me love;
He showed me myself.
I asked Him to bring me great wealth;
He gave me my children.
I asked God, How can I thank You?
He gave me a pen!!!

New England
’Tis New England
Aspiring to ageless
heights of wonder,
with mill and steeple,
light house, covered bridge
and trails of mounted
passes down through valleys,
find a simple folk
on wisdom’s ridge.
Conservative with faith
hard working for a
precious little—content;
all in rural townships
they exist, big cities
not to know
man’s dollar spent.
Mountains fill the scenes
of pine through haze
and hold a glint
of sun until it’s nigh,
ledged with granite
sheared to open space
where bush and shrubs
of berries live and die.
Rolling hills of Clover,
Buttercups, Daisies
and the blues
that
line the trails,
winding roads of
lavenders and reds,
explode beneath the
Summer’s heated veils.
Rust and red and
Yellow find the Fall
To fill the mountains
With sweet Autumn’s gleam.
Lakes and ponds and
Rivers now to cool and calm to next
Reflect a season’s dream.
Coverlets of white
express the cold,
crisp, the wind in
zeroed temperature.
Sleep-filled are all
greens as days are short
where silence holds
with Winter’s manicure.
Hilltops crowned with
many granite stones
or marble to describe
those come and gone,
many are the grave
yards cross the land,
many are the memories
of love and brawn.
Far and wide across
the rolling earth,
standing long between
enduring pine,
whitened steeples host
the loyal eyes and
raise all heads up
toward the Great Divine.
So loyally are kept
the grains of will,
from pioneers, the
first to build a way,
technology has altered
much and yet,
the toiling remains
New England’s stay.
Homes of logs and
covered bridges stand
and cemeteries age
with tales untold.
steeples stay erect of
heightened white as
seasons with great
dominance unfold.
Recipes reflect the
Wood-filled stoves,
church suppers keep
their families all sharing;
the coast is
