About this ebook

Inspired by lifes obstacles, poet Kimplachat Downs promotes the empowerment of women in her poetry collection, Protecting Your Innocence. She encourages women to tell their stories, resulting in the shedding of excess baggage, bitter pasts, and vague future views about love. The key mission is for women to find their way back home resuming the role that it is okay to be loved beyond their pain.

Downs is an ambitious young woman with a story to tell, and she has found her passion in writing poetry for and about women. She offers inspiration to women, encouraging them to find hope as they move beyond their daily challenges. With her strong views and voice, she conveys a message of hope to the world of women. In her poetry, she draws from her personal pain, recalling the countless times she has been lost and drawn her strength from God and from those she holds closeher family and friends.

Protecting Your Innocence provides guidance to women who need to know their worth and to discover who they truly are: women of substance.

    Acknowledgments

I owe it all to God. I thank him for all of my gifts and talents. To my family in Christ, wow! Thank you for all the prayers that you sent up. Deniyah Downs, my love, thank you for sharing your mother with the world. You are my inspiration to reach for the stars. I love you. I would like to thank my wonderful parents, Barbara and Charles Pettway, for the endless and unselfish support throughout my life. I want to thank the rest of my family as well for supporting me and being present at every event.

A special thanks to my photographer, Kenneth Smith of Waukegan, Illinois, for shooting the cover of this project. Kwan Duncan, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for God allowed you to come into my life at that appointed time and plant a seed, which continues to grow within. You truly helped place my feet on a path to finding a better me because you shared your story. I now give the world what I have within me, in hope that all women would desire to know their worth. And it started from the seed you planted.

Thank you to Ray Micheal Williams of Powerful Thinking. Thank you for the constant encouragement to reach beyond the stars and for affording me the opportunity to speak on your amazing show. Many people have started the journey with me, yet only a few have remained.

I say thank you to everyone, whether your role was to leave me with a lesson learned or to just simply blow with the wind. You have played a major role in the completion of this project. You are greatly appreciated. The people who still remain in my life are there for a reason.

With that said, to my family and friends, I love you all and would not have it any other way. I look forward to the journeys that lie ahead.

    Introduction

So many times, we as women lose our self-identity when we try to prove our worthiness of a man’s love. As a woman, the apple of God’s eye, it is a natural desire for marriage and a family, all surrounded by a white picket fence.

Yet what happens when things don’t work out as planned? I will tell you what. Your scars become proof of all residues left behind from heartbreak, bitterness, and need for revenge. The best thing you can do, aside from leaving him, is to discover a new you.

In Protecting Your Innocence, you will find the realities we as women face. Oftentimes, we keep the outcomes suppressed, fearing what others may think. Some may hold on to failed marriages for the sake of the children. The children, not you, are hurt in the situation. It has now become evident in society that our children are not only a product of us, but also the examples we set in their early adolescence. Believe it or not, something as simple as the way you carry on a conversation, along with your presentation, has an impact on their behavior. Oftentimes, we do things in the presence of children not being mindful, resulting in them mimicking certain inappropriate behavior.

I never realized how three words—protecting your innocence—could cover so much. It is just what it reads, the innocence you had once before you lost sight of your self-worth as well as the innocence of the young woman-to-be that you are obligated to validate and protect. It all links back to your past, present, and future choices.

To all the single women with no children, what happened to the little girl you saw in the mirror? The one who had big dreams and goals to reach? Once upon a time, that little girl was you. Your dreams have escaped you, and your goals and aspirations in life, once so vivid, have faded to be nothing more than a figment of your imagination. On the other hand, some women are not willing to accept being alone. At times, we as women are not receptive to the ideal that the very things we desire in our lives are the very things God does not want us to have. Only because we want right now happiness in some cases, we tend to get more than what we bargain for. The worst feeling in the world is to love someone and not be loved in return.

From the breakups to the makeups, the abusive relationships, and the realization that you may not be the only one, all helps shape you into the woman you are to become. Hear me when I say, You are not alone. My broken heart as well as every bad situation has now become my strength and ambition to reach out to women,
