    Beautiful Eyes is a story that takes place in the early 1960s in an apartment complex in Bellerose, Queens, New York. Two next door neighbors, twelve year old Dougie, a boy with a genetic condition called Down Syndrome, and eight year old Lucy become best friends and spend an entire summer together. Sitting on the porch of their apartment complex becomes the highlight of their summer, until one very horrible day when Dougie becomes the target of two boys in his complex. They call him retard and make fun of his eyes. Though Dougie does have Down Syndrome, Lucy thought he had the most beautiful eyes in the world and never realized that he was different than most children his age. Lucy is confused and angry at how the two boys had treated her very best friend. With the help of her mother, Lucy learns a life lesson about diversity.

    Lisa C Ockun is a retired elementary school teacher who had been part of the New York City education system for twenty-sevens years. Fifth grade was her specialty and she had met many wonderful children, parents, and school personnel. The school she had worked in for most of those years, P.S.162, was her home away from home. As a fifth grade teacher, she involved her children in many creative activities to gain their interest in the subject areas they found either boring or difficult. Theatre arts is her passion and for fifteen years she was involved in the production of various broadway plays that involved the entire fifth grade. Many children excelled as a result. Lisa is the wife to Mark, a wonderful husband and devoted friend, mother to two girls, Heather and Melanie,and the grandmother to six wonderful children, Ethan, Hannah, Connor, Megan, and Summer. One more grandchild is expected sometime in December. She loves to spend quality time with her husband, children, and grandchildren traveling to museums, libraries,broadway shows,movies, amusement parks, aquariums,ecology centers,and visiting many different places around the country where she and her family get to meet some very interesting people. Lisa loves to sing, dance,bowl,read,play Mah Jong, ice skate,sleigh ride, swim, exercise,and of course write. Lisa loves animals and presently has two adorable dogs. Her time is devoted to taking care of her pets, her family, writing, and working her May Kay business. Her friends and family are all so supportive of her love for her MaryKay business, her passion for writing, and the production of her books. Lisa is so passionate about her books because they deal with issues that have touched so many lives, including hers.
