I was born in the west end of Newcastle upon tyne in 1944. I went to a secondary modern school, well I say I went to tell you the truth I was never there and at the age of fifteen I left school and that’s when my troubles started. I got into a lot of trouble and finished up in a detention centre for three months and again I couldn’t keep out of trouble and spent most of my three months on what was called the block. Two weeks after being released from detention I was sent back to the same detention centre for a further six months, and from there I went to borstal for two years and then I went to prison for eighteen months After that I decided to turn my life around I got married and settled down with a good woman who has kept me on the right path

I dedicate this book to my wife Mary who has kept me on the right road all these years, and to my family who has given me so many years of happiness.

    CHAPTER ONE

    THE PHONE CALL

As Ray Hunter stood at his bedroom window looking down the street he could see people heading of to work, mothers taking their kids to school. On the left hand side of the street he could see three young lads pushing and shoving each other trying to impress the three girls sitting on the wall waiting for the bus that would take them all to school. Ray shook his head and smiled yawned and then took a draw of his cigarette and blew the smoke against the glass. He turned around and looked around his bedroom. Ray shook his head again and thought what a fucking mess, his clothes from the night before were scattered around the floor he walked over to his bed and sat down. On his bedside table were two empty mugs both with cigarette ends in them. Hanging on the lamp shade above his bed was a pair of black see through knickers, so who ever she was she left with no knickers on. Or did she whoever she was leave them there to remind Ray of their night of passion, or was it simply because she couldn’t reach them without waking Ray up. And on top of all that Ray had the mother of all fucking hangover’s what more could any man want.

Ray stood up and headed for the kitchen and after searching all the cupboards found a clean mug and made himself a mug of tea. Mug in hand he made his way back into his bedroom and sat on his bed. Putting his mug of tea on his bedside table Ray put his head in his hands and rubbed his eyes, now his head was really throbbing. Just then Ray heard his mate Dave’s voice.

    Where’s my friggin tea Ray?

Dave Smith was five foot six with black curly hair not that well built but with a heart of gold and one of Ray Hunter’s closest mates.

Like Ray, Dave had grown up in the west end of Newcastle. At an early age Dave’s father had left him and his mother for the bar maid who worked behind the bar in their local pub. Dave’s mother had taken it badly and had turned to drink. Every night she would drink herself to sleep while poor Dave was left to fend for himself. Dave then turned to crime, at first it was purely for the excitement, but later it became necessary so he could keep his mother supplied with the drink she needed to help her sleep and for Dave to eat.

Ray looked up to find his mate Dave standing in the doorway in his underpants scratching his balls. Dave had stayed in the spare room last night. One, because he was too pissed to make it home and two, because the girl he had been buying drinks for all night had fucked off with another bloke with a fancy car. Only now it was a fancy car with two dents in the driver’s door where Dave and Ray had kicked it.

You ok Ray? Dave said as he walked towards the bed.

Yeah, I’m ok I’ve just got one hell of a hangover and my fucking heads ready for bursting, but apart from that I feel fucking great .

Ray took a drink of his tea and then passed his mug of tea to Dave.

Here have some of that it’s the only clean mug in the place. Dave took the mug of tea and sat on the end of the bed. After drinking most of the tea and after lighting up one of Ray’s cigarettes he said. What happened to the girl you had in here last night? then Dave looked up at the lamp shade above the bed and laughed. She must have left in a hurry this morning Ray, she’s left her knickers on your lamp shade.

Ray shook his head. I’ve got no idea what time she left, all I know is she was gone when I woke up.

Dave drank some more of the tea, in fact he drank the rest of the tea and then he threw his cigarette end into the empty mug.

Ray looked at Dave and shook his head.

Did you enjoy my tea and my cigarette you twat?

Dave smiled and nodded his head.

That was the best cup of tea I’ve had in a long time Ray.

Before Ray could say anything Dave stood up and said. Relax Ray, I’ll go and make you another mug of tea, in fact I’ll make us both a mug of tea.

Dave picked up the two mugs that were on the bedside table and as he walked towards the bedroom door he stopped turned around and said. By the way what time are we picking Jeff up from the station?

Ray smiled and shook his head again as he said. His train should get in about eleven o clock, and Dave you make sure you wash your hands before you wash those fucking mugs out."

Jeff Thompson was Ray Hunter’s best mate in fact you could say they were like brothers. Jeff’s old man Frank had practically brought Ray up since he was a kid because Ray’s father had died when he was nine years old. Ray’s mother had taken it badly but had decided to get back on her feet get a job and feed her family which was Ray and his older sister Mary. Mary tried her best to look after Ray while there mother was at work. Even at his age Ray understood the pressure his mother was under to keep the family together. He knew at his age he could not get a job but he could break into shops and then sell the stuff he stole and give the money to his big sister to help support the family. Ray had made his sister Mary promise never to tell their mother where the extra money was coming from.

Over the years Jeff’s old man Frank had taught Jeff and Ray never to take chances, he would tell them only do a job if you know for sure you can get in and out without being caught and never take chances. But as Jeff and Ray grew up they didn’t listening to Jeff’s old man, to them Frank was an old man now they were the new generation who knew it all. But like all young men who thought they knew it all they came unstuck a few times and finished up doing Detention and then Borstal.

Jeff had got himself six months for breaking a bottle over a blokes head in the local pub. The night it happened Dave and Ray had been driving home from Manchester after dropping off a van load of telly’s otherwise Dave and Ray would have been with Jeff that night and they would have probably have got six months as well.

Dave came back into the bedroom and handed Ray a mug of tea and then sat on the end of the bed. And after lighting another one of Ray’s cigarettes and then looking around the room Dave said. Do you ever clean this place up Ray?

Ray put his mug of tea on the bedside table, and lit one of his cigarettes and then smiled at Dave.

Not if I can help it, my sister usually gives it a quick going over when she comes up to pick my washing up.

Dave smiled and shook his head then continued to drink his tea.

Dave and Ray got ready and made their way to the train station, by the time they had found a parking space and walked up to the entrance Jeff was just coming out of the station.

Dave shouted. Jeff. Jeff turned around and with a big smile on his face walked towards Dave and Ray.

Ok lads how’s it going, I’ve missed you two twats I’m fucking starving lets go and have some breakfast.

The three of them put there arms around each others shoulders and Jeff said. The three Musketeers are back together again, I’ve missed you two twats, now let’s go and eat.

Just up from the station was a cafe that the three of them used quite regular, after eating their breakfast Jeff sat back in his chair and lit a cigarette.

Now lads what’s been happening while I’ve been fucking locked up?

Ray looked at Jeff, smiled and shook his head. Jeff had always been the goby one out of the three of them; he never knew when to keep his mouth shut. All the fights they had were started because of Jeff’s mouth, but even with a big mouth he was still a great bloke to be around.

Not much really. Dave replied Ray and me have done a few jobs while you’ve been locked up, but that’s about it."

Jeff sat forward in his seat and put his cigarette out.

Ok then lads what about tonight are we going for a good drink and I need a good shag. I’m broke mind you, unless I can borrow some money off the old man you two will have to pay for my beer.

No problem. Dave said. I’ve still got a few quid left from the last job Ray and I did, so we’re alright for tonight. Now I don’t know about you two but I’ve got things to do. So if you could drop me of at my mothers place Ray, I’ll see you two tonight seven o clock in our local.

Dave was the quiet one of the three of them whatever Jeff and Ray said or did it was ok by Dave. Jeff on the other hand, his motto was, fuck it let’s just get it done. Ray was different when they had a job to do Ray would have to think about it first, then plan it out so each of them knew what they were doing. But even though they were all different in there own ways, they still worked well together.

Ray dropped Dave off at his mother’s place and then dropped Jeff off at his old man’s. He went back to his flat collected some washing and dropped that off at his sister’s house. He went to his mother’s and as usual she gave Ray a lecture on how he should get a job and settle down with a good woman. She made him a sandwich while he sat watching some rubbish on the telly. After watching it for a while Ray fell fast asleep.

Ray met the lads in their local and the three of them had a good drink that night. Jeff scored with a girl and that’s the last we seen of him until the next day. For the next few months that were all the three of them did, drink and shag.

Dave was working on a building site, while Jeff and Ray were robbing warehouses. But Ray was getting restless, he didn’t know what was wrong with him but robbing warehouses just wasn’t enough for Ray anymore he wanted more. He wanted his life to change, but didn’t know in what way. But little did he know his life and his two mate’s lives would soon change forever. This change would turn Ray’s life upside down and he would never be the same bloke again.

Ray had arranged to meet the lads in their local pub. He got there early and was sitting drinking his pint when Dave walked in. Ray waved him over and gave him the money to get the drinks. Dave smiled at Ray and said.

Have I got a fucking surprise for you’ you’re not going to believe this Ray, I’ll just get the drinks in then I’ll tell you all about it.

Ray thought to himself what had Dave been up to now he looks happy so he must have had a win on the horses.

Dave came back to the table and sat down then took a drink of his pint and lit one of Ray’s cigarettes. Ray was just about to slap him when he looked at Ray and smiled, then said. When I got home from work tonight my mother said someone had rang me today but wouldn’t leave their name. Whoever it was just left their number and told my mother to tell me to ring that number when I got home from work. I rang the number Ray and you’ll never guess who was on the other end of the phone.

Dave picked up his pint and took a drink.

Ray shook his head Dave had a habit of doing this he would tell you a bit of a story then stop.

Are you going to tell me or are you going to keep me guessing all fucking night?

Dave smiled at Ray again and said. Don."

Don Walker was a lad that Ray and Dave had met while down in London when Ray Dave and another bloke called Paul had escaped from a detention centre in the north east. The three of them had made their way down to London and it was this bloke Paul who had first introduced Ray and Dave to Don. Don was about five foot eight skinny with short black hair and had the dress sense of a tramp, but apart from that he had turned out to be a good mate. Don had introduced the lads to a bloke called Brian Dickson who turned out to be one of the local gangsters. Soon after that Ray and Dave returned to the north east where Ray was recaptured and sent to Borstal for two years. A few weeks later Dave was also recaptured and he also was sent to Borstal for two years.

After serving nearly two years of his sentence Ray returned home to the north east and forgot about Don and the time he had spent in London.

Ray looked at Dave and shook his head. Are you talking about Don from London?

    That’s right Don, from London.

Bloody hell, there’s a blast from the past. How did he get your mothers number, how’s he doing? Christ it must be nearly four years since we saw Don.

Dave smiled and said. Just before we left London the last time we were down there, I gave Don my mother’s number, I told him if he ever needed us to ring that number.

So what did Don want? Ray asked suspiciously.

Dave took another drink of his pint before he started to explain. "Right, Don said Mr. Dickson, that gangster bloke in the wheel chair sent for him and asked Don if he knew how to get in touch with Ray and his lads. Don told Mr. Dickson he had a number somewhere for us. Mr. Dickson told Don to find the number and call Ray and give him this message. Tell Ray I have a job for him and his lads to do. If he and his lads come down to London they will make good money of this job, and that’s all that Don had to say. I’ve got to ring Don back tomorrow night when I get
