About this ebook

This book gives a short biography of the people named in the book of Acts. Some were important in the spreading of the gospel, and some were determined that they would stop the spreading of the gospel. Some are Old Testament figures who were important in the history of the world. Three are crucial; without them, there would be no gospel.

Faye Callahan

In 1954 Faye Callahan fulfilled her desire to become a schoolteacher and came to a little town in Georgia called Hoboken. Even as a little girl she would line up her dolls and the little kids in the neighborhood and “teach” school. She attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia, and received a bachelor of arts in education and a master’s in education from Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, Georgia. She has always felt that the Lord had placed a calling upon her to teach, and her greatest joy is to teach the word of God. She has been a Sunday-school teacher for sixty-two years, teaching every age group, from nursery to adult classes. She now teaches an adult class at Kettle Creek Church in Waycross, Georgia. She tells everyone her next promotion will be to heaven. Her greatest joy is to study the word of God and to present it so that it will be understood and that others will find strength and courage to live for the Lord. As she studied, she would write down her thoughts and findings. Many times later she would be called upon to speak and would draw from these writings. The purpose of this book is to encourage others with their life’s experiences and to know the promises of the Bible are for each child of God. It is her desire that someone will find the courage to go on when life is at its lowest and that God’s word holds all the answers we need to life’s problems.

All my life I have heard from pastors and friends alike, You ought to read the Bible through this year. I have read my Bible faithfully from the day I gave my heart to the Lord at the age of 17. At the beginning of 2010 I was determined I would be able to say I have read my Bible all the way through. As a matter of fact I read it through twice that year. When 2011 came I thought- what good would it accomplish just to read it through again- I decided I would do something different, I didn’t know what, but it would be different. One time I thought I would read it from Revelation to Genesis just to see how it would read backward. I asked the Lord and He said start with the book Acts and take time to study it. That sounded good-as a Sunday school teacher for 60 years I have read and studied the book of Acts using many study guides and it has been very good. I thought how should I study it this time, by events, chronologically, or missionary journeys? Then I thought about making a time line, but I figured it would take paper a block long to do that. As I was reading the Book of Acts, I came across many names, some I was familiar with and some I read over very quickly with no thought. Then it hit me-I would do a study about the people named in the book of Acts, after all it was people that God used to carry his message. I found 112 different names listed. I was amazed at the contributions that some of these people made in the spreading of the gospel and others though barely mentioned had an important role too. Some of them were very familiar-Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, Paul, etc., but many of them were only briefly mentioned. Some of these people named are ones who tried their best to stop the spreading of this message. The more they tried to stamp it out, the further it spread.

This book is compiled with this information in one place, in hopes that it will be an inspiration for new and old converts alike and we will realize God can and will use anyone for His purpose and glory.

God expects us to witness and testify and gather the harvest of souls in our day. We might have to get out of our comfort zone to spread the word in our day. Wherever God has placed you work with all your heart, mind and soul. The way will not be easy, but the journey will be exciting and rewarding-and best of all we will have the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit with us every step of the way.

    Acknowledgments

First I would like to thank God for the opportunity of writing this. Without the encouragement of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit I would never have completed it.

I would also like to thank my pastor, Danny Callahan, for his prayers and encouragement when there were times I really doubted that it was God asking me to do this project.

I would like to thank my many friends and my church family for their love and support during this time.

    CHAPTER I

    The Twelve Original Apostles

In this section I listed the 12 original apostles, the ones Jesus chose as the men He trusted to leave the responsibility of spreading the gospel to the world. He knew they were humans with shortcomings, like all humans, but he knew that with the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit they could be relied upon to do His will. I have always heard that the book of Acts called The Acts of the Apostles could easily be called The Acts of the Holy Spirit. Since the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit played a dynamic role in the lives of these individuals enabling them to be more than they ever thought they could be. I counted 46 times that the name of the Holy Spirit is mentioned in the book of Acts. He, the Holy Spirit, is the third person of the Godhead, distinct from the Father and the Son, but united to both in the mysterious oneness of the Godhead.

The work of the Spirit is the immediate source of all life, physical and intellectual (Ps. 104:230; Job 32:8; Gen. 2:7; Exod. 31:2; Num. 11:17) are just a few of the scriptures that verify this. The Holy Spirit played an important part in the coming
